Reviews for French Cooking Classes in NYC

French Cooking Classes in NYC are rated 4.6 stars based on 363 verified reviews from actual CourseHorse.com purchasers.

  • What a lovely evening! The chef was attentive and informative.
  • So great!!
  • We were delighted to meet Chef Paul, enjoyed the food, and, of course, enhanced our mastery of French cuisine. The atmosphere was friendly and supportive, and our preparation was simplified. However, the advice and explanations from Chef Paul were precious. We can't wait to jump into the next cooking class with this extraordinary person. Thank you! Warmly, Kateryna and Volodymyr
  • Such a wonderful experience and I would highly recommend it to couples or friends or work colleagues. I definitely plan on going back!
  • Fantastic night! Food was phenomenal. Learned a ton - cooking techniques, types of ingredients to use (olive oil, salt, pepper, fish, etc), pans and utencils. Paul, the head chef, was a wonderful host and instructor, full of interesting stories and explanations. We really enjoyed the whole experience and definitely plan to do it again.
  • Excellent instruction. Loved the recipes!
  • Chef Paul was amazing! This class made for a perfect date night for my husband and me—and it would be just as ideal for a group outing or corporate event. Chef Paul was incredibly thorough in explaining the recipes and also took the time to answer all of our other (sometimes random!) cooking questions. He’s a true professional and truly one of a kind. You won't regret booking with him.
  • The staff was friendly, informative and professional. The food we cooked was excellent.
  • The teacher of this cooking class was so down to earth & friendly. She had all of the food prepared and ready for all of us to follow them cook the recipes. She even gave a brief knife cutting lesson. She explained each step of the way the four different recipes that we cooked. The food was delicious. She even gave us ziplock bags to take the leftover food home with us. She gets a AAA + rating from me.
  • Paul was an outstanding teacher—clear, patient, and supportive of all experience levels. The small class size allowed for some impromptu, personalized lessons, which made the experience even better. I'd definitely take another class with him.
  • So much fun!
  • The course was everything I imagined, and more! The food was delicious and the instructors were informative. I appreciated that wine openers, glasses, and infused water were offered during the class. I highly recommend taking this course.
  • The Classic French Countryside cooking class was a fun experience! Our instructor was engaging, knowledgeable, and funny. She shared with us some helpful tips to recreate the dishes at home. The recipes were simple and delicious. The kitchen setup allowed small groups to learn together and connect. We absolutely loved it!
  • I don’t recall the name of my instructor but, I will say that the class was very informative, our instructor made the process of making croissants very approachable. The class is definitely worth it for those who want to expand their food knowledge into baking and pastry making. What we made was very good and I would highly recommend it.
  • What a memorable experience this was! Cooking technique and menu aside, this experience was a lovely post-pandemic social activity for my partner and me; small scale, intimate, inexplicably clean, and interactive. Not only did we learn the proper hold of a knife, but also how to slice an onion with the stem still attached in order to keep the portions uniform, stable, and in order, but also the proportion of anchovy brine to blend into our salad dressing to taste. As a couple who love to eat, as well as learn together, this was a special experience, and one we got to share in the presence of others. We’re grateful for the opportunity to have learned, participated, and shared a table with everyone involved. Would highly recommend it to any lover of learning, food, culture, and good company. Many thanks, Katrina & Josh.
  • I had a great time at this class! Pauline was our instructor and she was very nice and made the croissant-making process very accessible. It is a 2.5 hour class but does not feel that long at all. And, of course, at the end of the lesson, you get to go home with what you made. I think baking has the stigma of being a little intimidating, but this class made me realize how surprisingly simple it is to make something good. It was a great class that ended deliciously!
  • This was a great class - learned so much and had a wonderful instructor who was kind and funny and a great teacher.
  • Great class! Food was excellent. Wine flowed all evening. Abigail was a phenomenal teacher. It was just a fun night out meeting new people.
  • I enjoyed the class. I'm not very good at English, but I could easily understand. And Nicola is very knowledgeable and good at explaining. The class size and atmosphere were good too!!
  • I really loved the class, evthg. from the quaint, homey set-up to the technique of cooking. Ivan was a great instructor and explained each step of the cooking procedures. We made vichyssoise, coq au vin, and creme brûlée. We also had a great and very social group, so that made for an even more enjoyable cooking experience.
  • Great fun. Learned lots. Want more!!!
  • Such a great class! John was awesome. So fun, delicious, informative, and personable!
  • It's great that John (our personal chef for the evening) made sure that we could re-create at home what we learned in class. He gave us shortcuts and handy tips and even explained the science behind why we should heat up our pans before we add the oil or why we put butter in AFTER the oil. This was my first time, but I will most certainly sign up for another class.
  • We learned SO MUCH - I cook a lot and learned amazing tips - how to make red wine vinegar - what knives to buy and how to treat them well - how to make vanilla extract - we travel together on a girl trip yearly and will be back next November - have already recommended your class to everyone!!
  • Class was awesome!! We would just like the recipe sent to us.
  • What an amazing experience we had in our French Steakhouse course. Chef Pablo was the best, so informative, Professional and fun! The assistants, Jafra and Andre were very helpful and answered all our questions as well. I look forward to returning for a class with my sister next year! Thanks Chef Pablo and team!!
  • Wonderful, fun class NICO was fantastic and we delivered as promised dozens of freshly baked croissants. Bon appetit!
  • Great class! Great chef (Jon)! Meal was fantastic and learned a lot of knowledge usable with many other techniques.. will definitely be cooking this meal and returning for other classes soon!!
  • The instructor John is beyond pleasant, helpful and kind. Have a wonderful time there and will make sure to come back to more of his classes.
  • Great recipes, simple to make yet tasted amazing! Friendly instructor with lots of useful tips in the kitchen. Great group of people to eat with.
  • Nice class
  • We attended a croissant making class given by Vincent. This was awesome! He was very knowledgeable, patient and fun. I highly recommend this class. Unfortunately, Vincent is leaving for Paris, would have loved to taken another class with him. But I'm confident that if Mille-Feuille Bakery hired him, they know what they are doing. The croissants were delicious and we would do this again!
  • Not only was it fun with the other people in the class but we all learnt to make a new stunning menu of delicious foods! Paul was great!!
  • The class was very hands-on and I learned a lot. The instructor explained everything and showed us what to do very clearly. She came around at each table to see if we needed help or if we had any questions. The only thing that was missing was that we did not receive the recipes at the end of the class and was told we would receive it by email later on which was a disappointment as I had wanted to try the recipes the next day so that I could internalize what I learnt.
  • The class was fun and the entire staff was very hospitable. Chef Clemente was very knowledgeable and he shared some really nice tricks with us. I would definitely recommend this class for a fun time but to also hone in on baking skills. We all left with a huge bag of the most delicious croissants.
  • So much fun and interesting!
  • Class was so awesome! The food is delicious! Wish there was a way to see/participate in both the appetizers and the mains being cooked and prepped, but I understand thats impossible when you have 4 courses to prepare at the same exact time! But you can float around when it is not your turn to help with the section you chose so you dont miss everything! The atmosphere is fantastic, and ivan was a great teacher. Cant wait to take the pasta course!
  • It was a very informative class. We heard stories, cooked and met interesting people. A very fun experience.
  • Was well organized and the class flow was seamless. I would definitely recommend and personally take additional classes.
  • Class was great, Vincent was charming, patient and informative. Croissants were delicious!
  • This was a great class! The instructor was a true French pastry chef, very knowledgeable and kind. We got to take home the dough we made and a bunch of almond, chocolate, cheese and plain croissants that we prepared as well. The bakery is very cute. I would definitely recommend it.
  • We had a great time in the class. It was great to learn from a true French chef who was really helpful and fun to work with. The croissants were so good and we really enjoyed having some structured flexibility to make different kinds of croissants including the classic plain, pain au chocolate, almond, and cheese!
  • Awesome class! Fun and very well organized. Chef Paul is great and teaches fundamental basics. Will definitely recommend this!
  • I loved learning the art of French cooking from Ivan and his team! I picked up many useful tips that I look forward to using in my own kitchen. The final product was delicious!
  • This class was extremely fun and very informative! Erica is hilarious and was such a great teacher. The food was incredible too! And seems absolutely doable to make at home on our own. Can't wait to take another Home Cooking New York class!
  • Great class. Great instruction! Will definitely do it again.
  • I have taken multiple course with Home Cooking New York, and each one is great. You get to watch, participate, and eat all the delicious food that is prepared. I have made most of the recipes later on at home on my own.
  • Wonderful experience and I simply can’t wait to indulge in some more classes.
  • Brought tons of cooking questions and Abby answered them all!!!
  • Ivan was a great chef and host with this cooking class. I chose this class specifically to learn French cooking because the techniques seem a bit challenging prior to this class however Ivan made it so easy! I learned how to make cheese and chive gougeres using the pate a choux dough method, French onion soup, beef bourguignon and decadent chocolate soufflé. These are dishes that every French restaurant serves but now that I’ve learned how to make it and its so simple, who needs to shell out $$$ for eating out at a French cuisine? I learned many knife skills, the types of cuts, and also classic French techniques. The class was in a very nice and quaint building right on Macdougal street and the students that I took this class with all had a blast. I would do this again for sure!

Discover the Best French Cooking Classes in NYC

French food has a special place in our culinary imaginations. From European aristocrats’ elegant balls, to the lavish diplomatic meals Thomas Jefferson served in the room(s) where it happens, to modern-day haute cuisine, French cooking is a highly prized skill. But despite the mystique that has grown up over highly paid, Cordon Bleu-trained chefs and rich meals, French cooking is really about returning to basics and enjoying what you eat. Like the modern, American-based farm-to-table movement that it inspired, French cooking emphasizes fresh, high-quality fruits and vegetables, well-matched spices, and careful preparation methods that allow the food to speak for itself. Learning French cooking is a great way to eat in a simpler, healthier, more mindful way, while also impressing your friends and family. As Julia Child once said, “This is my invariable advice to people: Learn how to cook—try new recipes, learn from your mistakes, be fearless and above all have fun.”

Why You Should Learn French Cooking in NYC

At a time when so many people are trying to simplify their lives, French cooking is a great way to save money and eat better food. Cooking food at home saves money—the average American spent about $67 per week eating out in 2018, about a quarter of what most spend on rent, mortgage, and other housing-related expenses. It’s also a great way to relax and reconnect with your family at the end of a long day at work. Even if you’ve been cooking at home for years, French cooking techniques are a great way to expand your repertoire. Whether you want to learn to prepare new dishes, or just to take a step back and think about the way you’re preparing your food, French cooking techniques are useful for all types of cuisine. Techniques like braising, sauteing, and sauce-making will kick any dish up a notch, and pastry-making opens a world of possibilities for savories and desserts.

Learning French cooking is also a fun way to relax, bond with family, and meet new people. Cooking as a group gives people a delicious activity to focus on while getting to know new friends. This is helpful for everyone, but especially introverts. You’ll also find that many are eager to act as taste testers as your cooking skills expand. It’s easy to find local and neighborhood groups like Cranford, NJ’s Cranford Cooking Dinner Parties Meetup Group. These neighbors gather in local parks to enjoy home-cooked meals together as a community. Finally, bringing desserts to share with co-workers always helps. Some experienced managers use their passion for baking to motivate their employees. Bringing treats for their teams is an easy way to increase job satisfaction and productivity.

And, because Taste Buds Kitchen is conveniently located on W 27th St, right between 6th and 7th Ave’s easily accessible public transit options, you’ll never have to worry about getting home safe. Miette’s class sizes are generally small, ensuring that you will get plenty of personal attention and assistance as you learn to create impressively airy soufflés appropriate for every time of day—and, of course, a chocolate soufflé for dessert. Virtual French Cooking Classes & Schools

Taking French cooking classes in-person is an enjoyable and energizing experience for many, but that’s not the only way to learn French cooking. There are many reasons that people find it easier or more convenient to learn this new skill through online French cooking classes. One pro of taking classes online is that you have more options. Even when you live in an area with many options, it can still be hard to find an in-person class that fits into your busy schedule, especially when you want to focus on one particular dish.

Another benefit of virtual French cooking classes is that you can use your own equipment. While some may see this as a drawback of online learning, many advanced home chefs know that, just as with other types of crafting, it is easier to learn new skills when you’re using familiar tools in a familiar space. Commercial kitchens are beautiful, but you’ll never be as familiar with a classroom kitchen as you are with your own. Finally, online classes can be a great option for shy beginners who are reluctant to cook in front of strangers, and more advanced students looking for a quick refresher course. Even if you aren’t able to be in the same room as your teacher, online instructors will still be able to answer your questions and help you out in real-time.

Crȇpes are a great option for those looking for a versatile, popular French treat. Crȇpes are incredibly popular—there are over 100 crȇperies in New York City alone—but few realize just how easy it is to make this beloved French street food on their own. Enter Home Cooking New York, the brainchild of Martha Stewart Living Omnimedia’s former Food Editor, Jennifer Clair. After more than a decade in food media, Clair went to culinary school herself. She started Home Cooking New York to further her mission of making home cooking more accessible to—and fun for—the general public. Home Cooking New York’s Virtual Crȇpe Workshop teaches students to make sweet and savory crȇpes from scratch. You will learn to create a classic crȇpe batter, cook your delicate pancakes to perfection, then fill them with savory cheesy Mornay sauce. The class wraps up with dessert in the form of that classic of French cooking, Crȇpes Suzette, full of buttery caramelized orange slices.

The Chopping Block Lincoln Square’s Virtual French Bistro class is organized around two quintessentially French dishes: Salade Lyonnaise and Steak au Poivre. Past participants rave about The Chopping Block Lincoln Square’s enthusiastic, well-organized, patient instructors. The Chicago-based cooking school caters to home chefs, so they’ve seen everything that can happen in a home kitchen. Their outstanding chefs will guide your cohort through both recipes, with special attention to selecting the best cuts of meat and fresh vegetables, balancing complex flavors, and mixing up a versatile vinaigrette. Upon registration, you’ll receive a syllabus, class schedule, and equipment and ingredient lists. Most of the things you need are easy to find at your local grocery store, bodega, or farmers market. A dedicated Zoom moderator will be on hand throughout the class to make sure that you get a chance to ask all of your questions. Every question will be answered during or after the class period.

As you learn more about French cooking, you’ll also want to learn more about French wine. Wine pairings are an integral part of most French meals, and you’ll want to learn how to select the wine that will best enhance the meals you prepare. While you can learn a lot about what wines you do and don’t like by trying them on your own, online wine classes make it easy to learn about different vintages from the comfort (and safety) of your own home. Whether you think you might want to go on to become a professional sommelier or you just want to learn more about how wines are made, a good wine-tasting class will help you appreciate the complex interplay of flavors in every glass. You can pair wine from any region with your French cooking, but the San Francisco Wine School’s Intro to French Wines is a great place to start. In this class, an experienced sommelier introduces participants to the grapes, methods, and wine-making styles used in France’s major wine-making regions, including Champagne, Burgundy, and Bordeaux. The San Francisco Wine School offers outstanding wine certification programs that encompass classes on international and domestic wines for enthusiasts and future professionals alike. They also make it easy to experience harder-to-find international varietals by providing a tasting kit that can be mailed directly to you once you’ve enrolled in the class.

After training in pastry in his native France, Chef Simon worked in prestigious restaurants around the world. He launched Atelier Sucré as a joint catering and teaching venture in 2014. With almost a decade of experience teaching in their well-appointed commercial kitchen, Chef Simon and his staff help home chefs of all levels learn how to make macarons, croissants, beignets, and more. Atelier Sucré’s French Macaron Class guides up to 15 people through every step in making the delightfully light, gluten-free pastry, from the almond-flour batter to creamy ganache and jam fillings. Atelier Sucré is conveniently located in Manhattan, NY’s East Village, near several public transit options. All materials are included in the class price. Atelier Sucré’s BYOB-friendly classes are easy to adapt for all occasions, including casual hangouts, birthdays, and corporate events. Classes can even be adapted to online settings, and you can always change the size of your group after booking. If you have a larger group in mind, it’s easy to contact the organizer and make special arrangements. Finally, if you want to sneak a taste of the pastries you’ll be learning to create—or just a tasty snack—Chef Simon’s macarons can also be sampled at Salon Sucré, a recent addition to New York City’s acclaimed Essex Market.

CocuSocial’s NYC In-Person: Classic & Creative Cocktails is an enticing option if you’re planning a more laid-back celebration for an over-21 crowd. Past guests sing the praises of Chef Carolyn, who combines her passions for performance and bartending to put on an informative, lively 2-hour introduction to classic cocktails. Carolyn’s background as a chef and bartender in restaurants across New England and European vacation spots has given her a deep understanding of how to pair the perfect cocktail with different types of cuisine. She is happy to consult with you ahead of time to plan out a well-matched menu of food and cocktails for your guests. This would be a perfect opportunity to bond over French cooking if members of your group might be reluctant to cook in public, or Carolyn’s cocktail class could be paired with a cooking class centered around a complementary French dish. CourseHorse’s online booking system facilitates any customizations you might want to make. NYC In-Person: Classic & Creative Cocktails is conveniently located in Midtown West, just a hop, skip, and a jump away from multiple public transit options and accessible parking options. The class can accommodate groups of up to 30. If you’re not sure how many are coming when you book, no worries—there are no booking fees and you can always change your group size after booking.
