Reviews for Art Classes in NYC

Art Classes in NYC are rated 4.6 stars based on 20,789 verified reviews from actual CourseHorse.com purchasers.

  • I took the Fundamentals of Drawing & Painting and I loved it! I reconnected with my passion for art and I was guided very well to complete a piece of art I was proud of and could hang up! Would 100% recommend!
  • Ocie was fabulous - skilled and clear! It was a pleasure taking this class!
  • This class was great! A lot of good information up front - the first half of the class is dedicated to the book-knowledge, whereas the second is the more technical knowledge. You get to take the flowers and pot home with you, so it's worth it. The instructor was sooooo cute - she's a riot, and she's super fun to work with. Would highly recommend.
  • Alina Oswald is an excellent, patient instructor.. The lesson was methodical and well-paced. She provided helpful printed material during the lesson and the next day emailed me extensive follow-up information relevant to the lesson. I recommend her highly!
  • This was so fun! I brought my friend and we love to do arts projects. We brought our own beer and had a great time. There was not a lot of time to sip our beer during the class but that’s because we were very focused on the artwork. If you are a little unfamiliar with painting I would say the pace of the instruction may be a little fast. But I am already excited to come back.
  • James was a caring, dedicated, and passionate teacher. I have taken many drawing classes over the years and this was one of the best, and I've learned new skills as well! I highly recommend this class to anyone he wants to be taught by a wonderful teacher, and enhance their skills.
  • Baran was such a great teacher. He made sure that we understood the purpose of each tool and taught us the correct technique to use them. The class was super fun and a great learning experience. And my beverage caddy is so cute!! Would recommend this class 100%!
  • So much fun! The class made sewing feel more accessible and doable! Teacher was very helpful and I feel like I can do some sewing at home now!
  • It was a fun project and Luci the instructor is very nice.
  • This was a great experience! My spouse and I were complete beginners, and had so much fun learning the basics. The class was full but only fits maybe 12 or so people, so it wasn't intimidating and there was always help when we needed it from one of the two instructors. The main instructor seemed to be newer than the other one, not as confident but definitely very skilled. 2 hours was the perfect amount of time! Make sure to ask for extra ideas/tips once you've gotten the basics - the only group instruction was for the basics, but some people seemed to get some very cool extra techniques from the instructors walking around and helping.
  • The instructor, Patrick, did a great job of explaining the basics. Had unlimited clay to use and would take the class again.
  • The class was wonderful. I am contemplating taking another one to make something more complex. Highly recommended.
  • Great class and space! Had pencils/easels, instructor was really good as well :)
  • I absolutely loved this class! I’d for years wanted to take a class to help me improve on my sketching and learn some basic techniques. I love to draw, sketch, watercolor and now I feel like I have some real skills to create. Raphael is a superb teacher, very personalized instruction and so talented and lovely. I’ll be taking more classes with him in the fall. Wonderful experience
  • Excellent guidance, great staff, good materials, all around amazing experience!
  • Great class and even better teacher. I progressed so much in just 3 classes. I would recommend to anyone who wants to start drawing.
  • I really enjoyed this 3 part series class. This is the first art class that i took as an adult and Rafael made the process very accessible and inspiring. I love that he provides all supplies so you don't need to buy anything in advance. Also new students come in every week and there are students there who have been working for longer which allowed me to see not just my progression but those of other students as well. I really learned how to see in this class and got much better at drawing than when I first began. Would recommend!
  • Carolina is a great teacher and excellent at her craft, and also inspiring
  • I had a great time learning how to use the settings on my camera, which had been sitting untouched in my office for 18 months. The class was perfectly tailored to my skill level, and I appreciated the hands-on practice. I learned how to effectively use ISO, aperture, and shutter speed, and took plenty of practice photos along the way. Thank you, Ocie!
  • Awesome class!
  • Fay was an excellent instructor! Im a tru beginner and she was so helpful in teaching me aboit color mixing and painting shapes and shadows. Her attention to detail is phenomenal. She was so encouraging and it made the class truly enjoyable.
  • Erin is lovely!! Really encouraging of expression in all its forms. It was such a great way to feel comfortable with coloured pencils.
  • I really enjoyed this class! Ocie patiently explained the fundamental concepts of photography, showed me how to use the menus and buttons on my new camera, and offered helpful critiques and exposure tips for the photos I took during the class. After just a few hours, I knew way more than when I started and felt confident to start taking pictures of the world around me.
  • This course was a lot of fun. Our instructor was amazing! We laughed out loud while learning valuable skills for our first time hand-throwing. They first do a demo, then walk you through step by step, and then let you have time to go for it yourself. I took my best friend for a birthday present, and we couldn't have been happier. It's worth every penny!
  • I had a really wonderful class at Glen's studio a couple of weeks ago. I'm still blown away by the bowl I made! Glen has a well-stocked, clean, and bright workshop that has two lathes, so the class will always be small. You get a lot of personal attention/instruction and he covered a ton of info, from which turning tools to use for each step, how fix gouges, how to apply your finish of choice such that it really, really gets into the piece, etc. He also answered all of my questions, from choosing wood, the differences between turning green vs kiln-dried, how the difference sizes of lathes can be best utilized and more. I've taken one turning class before from someone else, and Glen's class was much more informative and personal. Five stars, across the board.
  • The pace of the class was great and very beginner-friendly
  • The instructor, Patricia is very helpful and gracious.
  • Lots of fun and the instructors were awesome!
  • At first, I was intimidated to take a drawing course since I had no drawing experience, but I’m so glad I did. Raphael is a warm and inviting teacher, and there is absolutely no judgment in the class. He helps bring out each student’s unique style during one-on-ones and provides great critiques. You can tell Raphael truly loves art! Through this course, I learned shading techniques, depth perception, and proportions —all of which are foundational to drawing. I’m excited to apply these skills in future work, and I am retaking another class.
  • This class has been such a refreshing creative outlet. I had no formal training and barely drew before, but after just 3 sessions I am pleasantly surprised at what I created. Rafael creates a calm, supportive space and teaches practical techniques like mark mapping, scaling with reference points, and breaking down shapes—which made drawing feel approachable and fun. I also loved how he brought in artist references and bits of art history for inspiration. Highly recommend for anyone looking to reconnect with their creativity, no matter their starting point.
  • This class was very fun and informative! As someone who was interested in exploring their creativity, this was a really engrossing and community-based class to enjoy. The techniques about mark mapping, blending and erasing with charcoal and value were great. I would recommend this to anyone who wants to get creative - super good for beginners!
  • I had a lot of fun and learned a lot in this class! The different techniques, from Mark Mapping to blending/erasing with charcoal, to the value scale, were really helpful and clear. I feel like I progressed a lot in just a three week period with Raphael’s instruction. It was a really warm, community environment which made it enjoyable. Would recommend to anyone who wants to tap into their creative side. As pretty much a total beginner, it was great for me!
  • Really enjoyed this class. The instruction was more helpful than I thought it would be.
  • Leysan was a joy to work with -- offering knowledgeable insights and fun ideas that led to my creating a beautiful collage. I love too that so many different materials are on-hand to use. I've taken this class before and will continue to take it again and again in the future!
  • Lovely class! Couldn't believe how easy, relaxing, and satisfying it was!
  • Working with Raphael is a real joy. He's an artist through-and-through and conducts his class in a way that is conducive to hands-on learning. He always has something thought-provoking to say and creates a warm, encouraging, and friendly environment for students to learn various techniques and media in the visual arts. I was very surprised at what I was able to create after only 3 weeks of charcoal drawing classes, especially considering I had no prior drawing experience!!
  • 10/10 and this class is quickly becoming one of my favorite parts of the week! It has a relaxed atmosphere that makes it easy to focus and have fun at the same time. Everyone is friendly and supportive which makes the whole experience feel welcoming. Raphael is a great instructor giving personalized feedback and guidance no matter your skill level. I learned how to map out shapes using mark-making techniques and build form through light and shadow. One of the highlights for me was the quick sketching exercises, where I spent 10 minutes each drawing different objects with charcoal. At first it was intimidating, but it really helped me get more confident and comfortable with the process. I’m currently working with colored pastels and excited to see where that leads. If I could only take one art class, this would be the one.
  • Very engaging and didactic lesson. Teacher gave great tips and taught me a lot about basic techniques in just an hour. Will definitely be applying her tips in the future.
  • Great time and price
  • Lori was terrific. She was patient and a great teacher. I learned a lot and had so much fun. I highly recommend Lori at the Crafty Lounge!
  • Enjoyed the class, very informative, but fast paced. The teacher worked with us well. Showed you the key things so you can work with ur own machine
  • We had fun in the class with a good teacher. Came out with a pillow to take home. I enjoyed the class.
  • The instructors were excellent.
  • The instructor was very informative and provided hands-on instruction. Would recommend for beginners.
  • Emily was excellent loved the project. Would definitely take another class soon!
  • Great class. Had fun and learned a lot. Good idea for couples.
  • Wonderful class with a great lesson on the history and techniques of Ikebana, the art of Japanese floral design. It was both informative and hands-on—I learned how to create my own arrangement and got to make one myself. We carefully took it apart for travel, and I was able to take home a vase, which was an additional $50 (clearly listed when booking). The class itself was $150, and well worth it! Shout out to TikTok for the inspiration. The teacher is very sweet and her work is stunning.
  • Class was great, relaxed environment with good people, model was excellent, highly recommend!
  • I enjoyed the class, the instructor gave us personalized instruction, and I was happy to learn from a professional.
  • Junko is one of the sweetest people I’ve ever met! Full of knowledge in the world of ikebana and makes it easy to learn, engage, and have fun. Highly recommend taking this course!

Discover the Best Art Classes in NYC

Art is a vast subject that includes graphic and charcoal drawing, oil and acrylic painting, watercolor painting, candle making, flower arrangement, metal welding, and more. Art represents a unique way to express your thoughts and emotions. Some use art as a hobby, while others find unique full-time career options related to their passions. Whether you want to learn art as a hobby or turn it into a career, taking an art class is one of the best ways to learn art.

Why You Should Learn Art in NYC

NYC is a city of wonder. You can find endless opportunities for entertainment. However, the hustle and bustle of the city can begin to wear on your nerves if you don’t find a proper way to relax. Art is a good way to relieve stress while learning a productive hobby in your free time.

Art classes in NYC will also connect you to a larger community. You’ll be able to meet with others who have similar interests and join local art clubs and groups. In addition, some art skills are marketable. For example, taking a comic drawing class could help you find a job as a comic artist. Or, after taking a soap-making class, you could open up a part-time store to sell your creations.

In-Person Art Classes & Schools in NYC

In-person art classes offer a unique chance to connect with others who share your interests. In addition, you’ll gain access to personalized training and feedback from a professional instructor in your area. CourseHorse offers dozens of art classes in NYC, which guarantees you’ll find a class that sparks your interest.

For example, Brooklyn Craft Company offers a Beginner Embroidery Workshop for just $45 on May 11th. The class teaches students the basics of embroidery and will specifically teach how to complete a handmade peace sign. During the three-hour class, you’ll learn skills that will help you master the first steps of embroidery.

CourseHorse offers a class through Michelle Greene Sculpture called Mig Welding on April 22nd. You will learn to set the machine, tack, run a bead, and create a small sculpture to take home. You will also learn to set up a welding shop to create furniture and art. A unique part of this class is that it’s limited to only two students, ensuring that you get personalized feedback and guidance.

You can also take Stained Glass Lessons through Valeria Divinorum. The class has an average size of just four students and lasts two hours. Students will design their own stained glass artwork, gain an understanding of stained glass materials, use glass grinders, and create a stained glass art piece from start to finish. The class is held on April 19th and costs $175.

Another unique class is the Dyeing with Nature course through Better Than Jam's Store & Studio. The class teaches students how to use natural materials from a garden to prep and dye fabrics with lasting colors. Students can dye three items and learn how to dye fabrics at home. You can book a class on June 4th for $95.

There are countless classes available to those living in the NYC area. Some other options include a Pillow Workshop, an Accelerated Portraiture Drawing course, and an Intro to Jewelry Casting class. For more class options, visit CourseHorse’s NYC art class page

Virtual Art Classes & Schools

Although in-person classes offer the best benefits, there is also an option to take virtual art classes. Online art classes are best for those who can’t or don’t want to travel to class. You can take the course from the comfort of your own home.

Although many virtual art classes may require you to purchase your own materials, that’s not always the case. For example, the Preserved Flower Arranging course through Petal+Eon provides the flowers and vase delivery costs in the price of the class. This course takes place on April 19th and costs $77.

Another option is the six-session Acrylic Painting for Absolute Beginners course. Students will learn acrylic painting techniques for beginners with personalized instruction from a painting expert. The class costs $310 and starts on April 20th.

CourseHorse also offers Crochet for Beginners, which includes six sessions to teach beginners how to crochet. The class costs $275, and you’ll need to purchase your supplies beforehand. To find the supply list, simply read through the class description, and you’ll find a full list of materials you’ll need to get the best experience from the class. The class starts on April 19th.
