Forged Jewelry inspired by Ritual and Memory: The Ancient Balkans and Beyond
This workshop will combine a discussion, practice and execution of processes involved in the making of metal jewelry and objects in the current exhibition at the Institute for the Study of the Ancient World, Ritual and Memory: The Ancient Balkans and Beyond (an exhibit spanning the Neolithic Period through the Iron Age in southeastern Europe).
Organized by the Institute for the Study of the Ancient World in partnership with the Field Museum, Ritual and Memory features rare loans from eleven different countries and reveals the fluidity of cultural practices in ancient southeastern Europe across a great expanse of space and time.
The workshop will begin at ISAW, where the students will have the opportunity to study the ancient jewelry on display and find connections and overlaps in the way things are made. We will discuss in detail the techniques we are going to learn in the studio, and how these techniques, while shifting with technology, remain largely the same.
After the visit at ISAW, the workshop will move over to the 92NY Jewelry center. In the studio, we will have demonstrations on annealing, forging, tapering, wire twisting, and finishing, in brass, copper, or sterling silver, and get to work making our designs. Whether absolute beginner, or experienced jeweler, all will come away with a completed project.
Program begins at Institute for the Study of the Ancient World
