Best First Aid Classes in NYC

First aid is the on-site treatment of minor cuts, wounds, or medical conditions. The goal of first aid is to stabilize a condition and save a life until proper medical attention can be called. First aid can be practiced on both the self and on others. Often, it is the difference between life and death in survival situations, which can range from anything from animal attacks to heat stroke. First aid skills allow individuals to quickly assess the situation, take appropriate measures to control bleeding, immobilize fractures, administer cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), or manage heat-related emergencies.

Why You Should Learn First Aid in NYC

Learning first aid isn’t just valuable when it comes to helping others. It can also help you boost your own confidence in handling the emergency situations that can occur unexpectedly in everyday life. The knowledge and skills acquired through first aid training can potentially be the difference between life and death. While it’s impossible to predict when an emergency will arise, being equipped with first aid skills ensures that you’re prepared to handle a wide range of incidents.

Consider, for example, a scenario where you encounter a bike crash while commuting to work. In this kind of situation, your ability to administer immediate first aid can greatly impact the outcome for the injured person. By applying the appropriate techniques, such as managing bleeding or performing CPR, you could potentially save a life or stabilize a situation before professional medical help arrives.

In addition to being beneficial for the layperson looking to protect themselves and others, learning first aid can be a great initial step for those interested in pursuing a career in medicine. EMTs, nurses, doctors, and more are all trailed in first aid. While not all courses result in a certification that will allow you to practice medicine, even the most basic of courses offers crucial information and can help you understand if a career in medicine is best suited for you.

New York City is an especially great place to learn first aid. Not only are there a large number of first aid classes in New York, there are also numerous employment opportunities for students looking to leverage their new skills into careers as Emergency Medical Technicians or Paramedics. It’s possible to make a living in these careers, with the average paramedic in New York making $33.63/hr—more than 33% above the national average. New York is also home to some of the largest hospitals in the country, such as Mt. Sinai Hospital, NewYork-Presbyterian/Weill Cornell Medical Center, and NYU Langone Hospitals. With a population of over eight million people, New York is full of opportunity.

In-Person First Aid Classes & Schools in NYC

There are many first aid classes available in NYC. For example, 92nd St Y has a course called CPR/AED and First Aid for Child and Adult. In this class, participants will learn how to perform basic first aid for children and adults, as well as respond to cardiac arrest and choking hazards. Some topics covered include how to recognize an emergency, and the legal considerations of performing CPR or using an automated external defibrillator (AED)---a device used to restart the heart. Students will also learn CPR and AED usage and what to do in a choking emergency. Located in the Upper East Side in the center of Manhattan, the 92nd St Y is a 140 year old organization dedicated to providing education opportunities to all.

The 92nd St Y also has a course specifically geared towards baby and toddler safety. In the Baby/Toddler CPR and First Aid course, participants will learn many of the same skills as in the above course, but with infants and toddlers in mind. They’ll learn how to respond to a range of emergencies, from cardiac arrest to choking incidents. With this class under their belts, students can be sure that they’re equipped to keep the little ones in their lives safe.

Humans aren’t the only ones in need of emergency care. (2nd St Y also provides a course to help out your furry friends. The Pet First Aid and CPR class gives participants the skills they need to take care of their pets until emergency veterinary care can be sourced. Participants will learn skills such as how to handle bite wounds, choking, burns, poison ingestion, and more. Students will leave with a comprehensive understanding of how to assess emergencies and deliver care to their pets or the pets of others. This is an excellent course for any pet owners and routine carers, such as petsitters, groomers, and dog walkers. It’s important to note that this course is not a replacement for veterinary care, but rather is intended to equip students with the skills necessary to stabilize a situation before veterinary care is accessed.

Birth Day Presence, a premier childbirth education and doula provider located in Park Slope, Brooklyn, also provides classes for those interested in learning first aid. The Infant Safety and CPR class is for expectant parents or caretakers of children up to age 1. The space is baby friendly, and children are welcome. This course blends together lectures and demonstrations in order to teach participants how to respond to emergency situations. Topics covered include infant CPR, choking relief, car seat safety, and more. Instructors will offer live feedback on technique throughout the class.

Some people interested in first aid may also be interested in pursuing a career in medicine. The John Jay College of Criminal Justice, located in Hell’s Kitchen, Manhattan, provides an Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) class for those interested in pursuing a career in emergency services. This course is a collaboration with Rescue Training International. It involves the online delivery of theoretical knowledge, as well as a practical in-person portion. Students will leave ready to begin their careers as an EMT.

Students interested in first aid may also have an interest in non-Western interventions. While these methods aren’t a replacement for going to the doctor and getting medical care, participants may still be interested in the world of medicinal herbs and plants. Herbs 101, Intro to Medicinal Herbs is a class hosted by the Remedies Herb Shop. In this class, students will learn the foundations of creating herbal medicines. They’ll learn how to craft tinctures, infusions, oils, and salves. Remedies Herb Shop is located in Carroll Gardens, Brooklyn and sells organic and chemical-free herbs for both humans and animals.

Virtual First Aid Classes & Schools

Virtual courses offer both advantages and disadvantages. Some of the advantages include flexibility, convenience, and accessibility. Students can attend classes from anywhere, eliminating the need for a commute. In asynchronous classes, they can also access course materials and lectures at their own pace, accommodating different learning styles. Virtual courses often provide a more inclusive environment, enabling participation from those in rural areas who may not have access to in-person classes.

On the downside, virtual courses may lack face-to-face interactions, which can hinder social engagement, networking opportunities, and immediate feedback from instructors. Additionally, technical difficulties, distractions at home, and a potential sense of isolation can affect the learning experience. Ultimately, the choice between virtual and in-person classes depends on your own needs and limitations.

There are a few online first aid classes available. Birth Day Presence, a leading child education and doula provider, hosts both webinars and in-person classes on child safety education and childbirth. Their Infant Safety and CPR Webinar covers a wide range of essential topics related to infant safety, including car seat safety and how to handle choking hazards. The class offers a balanced combination of lectures and demonstrations, allowing participants to actively engage by using a doll, pillow, or even their own CPR dummy.

Interested in broadening your knowledge of medicine, or learning some of the terminology that goes along with first aid? The Medical Terminology I course provides students with the necessary terminology associated with the human body, encompassing diseases, organ systems, medicines, and more. This course is an excellent choice for individuals embarking on a medical career, or those who simply wish to enhance their knowledge of the medical realm. Los Angeles City College offers this course online.
