What you'll learn in this shakespeare class:
He will examine how Adès found musical equivalents for certain elements of the Shakespeare, most notably Ariel's speech and Prospero's magic, and how the libretto deviates drastically from Shakespeare's text.
Matthew Aucoin will teach a two-course series focused on Thomas Adès's opera based on Shakespeare's The Tempest, a piece Matthew assistant-conducted this past season at the Metropolitan Opera. Matthew will also look at past musical settings of The Tempest, including the many versions of "Full fathom five" – from Purcell to Stravinsky – and the Tempest opera Mozart longed to write.
