Revzen-i Menkuş: Embroidered Windows

Revzen-i Menkuş meaning “Embroidered Window” in Ottoman Turkish is a specific form of architectural glass application made with gypsum plaster and sheet glass, frequently seen in mosques, palaces and houses. The more complex designs are installed within the interiors of buildings, because of the need to preserve their fine plaster frames and the works that can be seen from the outside named “exteriors,” are produced with stronger frames and less intricate patterns.

In this class, students will be introduced to this technique and create their own designs using plaster and sheet glass. Students will learn the basics of cutting glass, making molds and will experiment with carving on the finished works. There will be presentations on the history, current and past applications of the technique. Discussion on natural light, colored sheet glass and designing the shadow/light will also be part of the workshop.

What to Expect: This workshop will take place in the mold shop of UrbanGlass. There will be demonstrations about the process and historical background. Each participant will design a small-scale piece and create their own architectural glass projects.

Eligibility: No previous experience required. Open to ages 14 and up.
