Class Description

Description

What you'll learn in this glass blowing class:

One-Day of Neon at Brooklyn Glass is a concise introduction to the art and science of neon tube making! Students can expect to learn about the components that make a neon tube, the tools needed, and the method to create a spectacular custom light source.

Students can expect to create an abstract piece of neon, using various torches with intimate instruction. In addition, students will learn the bending basics such as splicing, attaching electrodes, double-back bends, right angle bends, and more.

Unlike other neon workshops, our classes are housed within a fully functioning neon shop and neon supply warehouse, allowing us to offer an abundance of materials needed (various colored tubing, power supplies, and hanging materials) on site. Many of our instructors work as full time neon producers and have years of industry experience.

The price of class includes glass, bending materials, one power supply and wiring. Neon units can take up to 2 weeks to be pumped, all neon units must be tagged with the following information: name, email, date and what gas is to be filled in it.

Q&A

Q: What if I'm unable to come back to collect the finished pieces?

Very fun class- thought it was a good intro to help you decide if it's something you might want to pursue further. It was structured very nicely - never felt too rushed. Loved that we got to take home an abstract neon piece and learned some basic bends and techniques.

This course was one of the coolest things I've ever done in New York. Brooklyn Glass is an impressive space with some amazing people. Kody and Mike were fantastic instructors - knowledgeable, patient, and funny. Our class of seven students each made a unique piece, learned about neon, and got to watch Kody quickly make an impressive sign. While the price isn't cheap, it's totally worth it!

This was a great 1 day class that covered many basics that made it possible to complete our project. Not intimidating at all for a beginner. The instructors were very knowledgeable, helpful, and friendly. Great overall vibe! Cool space. Made me want to take more classes!

Overall, I enjoyed the course, but it was definitely more demonstration-based than experiential. The amount of time I spent actually bending Neon totaled about 5-10 minutes. The other 4 hours and 50-55 minutes were spent learning about Neon and watching the instructor complete some pieces.

Question from Anonymous
Hi, I'd like to be able to make a sign kind of like this: https://www.smart-elements.com/Angebote/Xe_tube800x600.JPG the exact details of the shape aren't important, but I'd really like to make a sign that reads "Xe". Do you think that would be possible in this course? Also, do you get to pick which gasses you dope the neon with?
Answer from Brenda L. CourseHorse StaffCourseHorse Staff
Hi there! The student cannot create this in a one day class. You will have to take an eight-week lettering course if you would like to make anything with lettering. Students make abstract neon sculptures in our one day class. Hope this helps!

Hi! I want to end class with a simple neon tube of light that I can use in my home. Is this possible? How large?
Answer from Brenda L. CourseHorse StaffCourseHorse Staff
Hi there! Yes, you can leave with whatever shape you want. The purpose of the class is to bend the tubing and learn these bending techniques are applied to neon sign making, but you are the artist, if you want a straight tube, you can make a straight tube! Hope this helps!
Answer from Brenda L. CourseHorse StaffCourseHorse Staff

Question from anonymous
By the end of the class, is it possible to make a neon sign that is a 5 letter word?
Answer from Brenda L. CourseHorse StaffCourseHorse Staff
Hey there! Making letters or other precise images in neon require more experience and practice than the student will get in a one day class. If you are interested in learning how to bend neon into letters, you may check the 8 Week Neon Letter class here: https://coursehorse.com/nyc/classes/art/glass-blowing/8-week-neon-letter1. Hi there! A 220v transformer must be used in this case, however, you will have to use her own European transformer.
