Reviews for In-Person Classes in NYC

In-Person Classes in NYC are rated 4.6 stars based on 60,678 verified reviews from actual CourseHorse.com purchasers.

  • I came in with 2 pair of pants that I wanted to learn how to repair and did just that even though I never used a sewing machine before. My instructor, Wioletta, was amazing. Patience, encouraging, and light hearted. The hour went by so quickly. I didn't have any real interest in learning how to sew before this, but now I purchased my first sewing machine and I'm considering taking the 101 bootcamp!
  • This tour was really good - when it started, you sat down and they took your order for a free drink, and then you were free to leave the cabin and go out on the deck. If you head out early you can get a good spot so that you can see the NY landmarks. Also, when you got to the Statue of Liberty, they had an assistant there ready to clear an area of the deck so that everyone could take at least one picture if they wanted, which I thought was cool (since many people had flocked to the deck to take pictures of her and it blocked a lot of space). Overall, this was so relaxing. I will say, perfect date night idea!
  • Detail oriented instructor and beginner friendly class.
  • Lots of personal attention, care, and encouragement, and everything provided. It really gave a good introduction to the skills and techniques you need to become a jeweler.
  • Highly recommend. The Home Cooking kitchen is immaculate, and well stocked. Our instructor, Chef Al as super personable and shared several cooking tips for preparing dips, noodles, knife skills, deboning chicken .... and also provided detailed hand-outs so we could replicate at home. The class was fun, interactive and informative. What's more, we had time to test and enjoy a delicious Vietnamese dinner, family style, all within the 3 hour time slot. I absolutely loved the shrimp/pork spring rolls, and the marinated chicken. Loved it so much I've signed up for another class.
  • One of the best experiences I've had in a while. the chef was amazing the food was incredible, I would recommend to anyone that has never been or done a cooking class. 10 starts
  • I took the Fundamentals of Drawing & Painting and I loved it! I reconnected with my passion for art and I was guided very well to complete a piece of art I was proud of and could hang up! Would 100% recommend!
  • Learned so much in this class! Instructor was knowledgeable and personable, food was great, and I feel like I have a lot of takeaways that I'll be able to actually implement on my own.
  • Ocie was fabulous - skilled and clear! It was a pleasure taking this class!
  • This was a really fun class for my teenage daughter and I to take together!
  • This class was so much fun — my husband and I learned a lot and enjoyed a delicious meal at the end of it.
  • I had THE MOST fun in this class. The instructor was a riot - super high energy, and the bar was actually so nice (the food slaps). The cocktails were delicious, and you get a variety. It's 100% worth the money for this one. Would highly recommend.
  • This class was great! A lot of good information up front - the first half of the class is dedicated to the book-knowledge, whereas the second is the more technical knowledge. You get to take the flowers and pot home with you, so it's worth it. The instructor was sooooo cute - she's a riot, and she's super fun to work with. Would highly recommend.
  • Fun, great instructor.
  • What a great yoga center! I really enjoyed going there twice a week for 4 weeks and being led by the experienced and warm teacher Aspara. Most students didn’t have much yoga experience and each class explored one of the 5 foundations of yoga (breathing, meditation, diet, positive thinking and poses). We went through the twelve poses in a slow and controlled pace. No pressure here, you do what you can! Price is very reasonable since the center is supported by volunteers. I’m looking at taking another class.
  • Alina Oswald is an excellent, patient instructor.. The lesson was methodical and well-paced. She provided helpful printed material during the lesson and the next day emailed me extensive follow-up information relevant to the lesson. I recommend her highly!
  • This was so fun! I brought my friend and we love to do arts projects. We brought our own beer and had a great time. There was not a lot of time to sip our beer during the class but that’s because we were very focused on the artwork. If you are a little unfamiliar with painting I would say the pace of the instruction may be a little fast. But I am already excited to come back.
  • James was a caring, dedicated, and passionate teacher. I have taken many drawing classes over the years and this was one of the best, and I've learned new skills as well! I highly recommend this class to anyone he wants to be taught by a wonderful teacher, and enhance their skills.
  • I really enjoyed the work. Finding my voice. Being challenged to write. Being honest. Learn to Take a risk. I would recommend to anyone. I’d definitely do it again.
  • The event exceeded expectations. Everything was excellent. Thanks for your help.
  • It was great! Everyone really loved it!
  • Everything went really well—Erik was a hit with the team and incredibly knowledgeable. We’ll definitely be returning!
  • Our instructor Kavina was amazing! We had such a fun time and loved the class thanks to Kavina. Thank you for your assistance in coordinating!
  • I've heard nothing but great feedback and they all had a great time! Thank you again!
  • You guys did an incredible job and I know our group was a lot to handle, so thank you again.
  • I'm completely new, I took two classes. The atmosphere is very friendly and welcoming. The class has a group of people who consistently go there, so there is a community. Great intro to improv, and I totally will come back.
  • Loved this course so much I'm already trying to figure out a next level of it! Even as someone who already does cook at home, especially within my culture's cuisine I learned so much in this class. In particular strong foundational things that ground you in how to think about food and cooking so that we can continue exploring ingredients and flavors beyond what we do in class. Very highly recommend!
  • Amazing cocktail making class, really interesting class with a lot of details and explanation of how and why we were mixing the drinks a certain way! Will be back again
  • Great experience! The croissants were delicious and the instructor was super knowledgeable. Would definitely do another class there!
  • The class is very well much fun and enjoyable. The instructor was very well prepared and he conducted the class with humor and enthusiasm. My partner and I enjoyed kneading the pizza dough and learning the cutting techniques. Finalizing the pizza with sauce and cheese and seeing it come out steaming hot from the oven makes the experience unforgettable.
  • The room needed little ventilation and air but the instructor was very good, very knowledgeable in the dance, really liked how every move in the warm ups came together into something cool at the end!
  • Baran was such a great teacher. He made sure that we understood the purpose of each tool and taught us the correct technique to use them. The class was super fun and a great learning experience. And my beverage caddy is so cute!! Would recommend this class 100%!
  • A lot of fun! Delicious! Recipes are simple and can easily make at home. Thank you!
  • So much fun! The class made sewing feel more accessible and doable! Teacher was very helpful and I feel like I can do some sewing at home now!
  • It was a fun project and Luci the instructor is very nice.
  • This was a great experience! My spouse and I were complete beginners, and had so much fun learning the basics. The class was full but only fits maybe 12 or so people, so it wasn't intimidating and there was always help when we needed it from one of the two instructors. The main instructor seemed to be newer than the other one, not as confident but definitely very skilled. 2 hours was the perfect amount of time! Make sure to ask for extra ideas/tips once you've gotten the basics - the only group instruction was for the basics, but some people seemed to get some very cool extra techniques from the instructors walking around and helping.
  • Chef Gil and the whole team put together a wonderful class. We didn’t know anything about this place but will definitely be back in the future!
  • The instructor, Patrick, did a great job of explaining the basics. Had unlimited clay to use and would take the class again.
  • The class was wonderful. I am contemplating taking another one to make something more complex. Highly recommended.
  • The chef was great!!!
  • Great class, fun and knowledgeable instructor, and amazing food! We learned how to make two kinds of Paella and two other Spanish recipes. Delicious!
  • Very entertaining
  • Great class and space! Had pencils/easels, instructor was really good as well :)
  • Delicious recipes and great instruction.
  • I absolutely loved this class! I’d for years wanted to take a class to help me improve on my sketching and learn some basic techniques. I love to draw, sketch, watercolor and now I feel like I have some real skills to create. Raphael is a superb teacher, very personalized instruction and so talented and lovely. I’ll be taking more classes with him in the fall. Wonderful experience
  • Excellent guidance, great staff, good materials, all around amazing experience!
  • Excellent instruction and content. Friendly, non-intimidating atmosphere.
  • Great class and even better teacher. I progressed so much in just 3 classes. I would recommend to anyone who wants to start drawing.
  • I really enjoyed this 3 part series class. This is the first art class that i took as an adult and Rafael made the process very accessible and inspiring. I love that he provides all supplies so you don't need to buy anything in advance. Also new students come in every week and there are students there who have been working for longer which allowed me to see not just my progression but those of other students as well. I really learned how to see in this class and got much better at drawing than when I first began. Would recommend!
  • Carolina is a great teacher and excellent at her craft, and also inspiring

Cooking Classes

Cooking is one of the most productive and useful skills that a person can learn. Learning to cook will help them expand their palate, save on their food bills, and help them eat healthier. It can also be a way to experience new cultures and culinary traditions as you learn to cook food from other countries and societies. There are numerous schools and kitchens offering cooking classes in NYC, so no matter what kind of food you want to cook or what kind of diet you have, you’ll be able to find a course that suits your needs.

New home cooks may want to start with a course like Home Cooking New York’sSix Basic Cooking Techniques. In this class, students will learn the basics of using knives, cooking meat, roasting vegetables, making pan sauces, blanching green vegetables and cooking leafy vegetables. At the end of the course, students will have prepared a delicious pan-roasted chicken with gravy and sides of roasted potatoes, green beans and Swiss chard with lemon and garlic. Once you are comfortable with these basic skills, you can enroll in a more advanced course, like the Southern Brunch class, where you’ll learn to prepare classic shrimp and grit, eggs benedict with fried green tomatoes and a spicy Hollandaise sauce and sweet cream biscuits.

If you are interested in learning to cook with (and drink) wine, you can enroll in Taste Bud Kitchen’sCooking with Wine course. This class will teach you how to incorporate wine into your cooking and how to prepare foods that are selected to pair well with wines. This course will cover the basics of preparing Salmon en Papillote, bacon and leek risotto, and red wine pears. The course is BYOB, so you are free to bring your own bottle of wine to enjoy with the meal and as you cook. You can also enroll in a class like the Sushi and Dumpling course, where you will learn how to make traditional Asian entrees and appetizers. In this course, students will learn how to prepare Uramaki, Maki and Temaki and hand roll veggie dumplings. The course highlights crab and vegetables, so if you aren’t interested in working with raw fish, the class will still have dishes for you.

Students looking for online cooking classes (so that they can learn to cook in their home kitchens) and learning more about traditional, regional cuisines should consider the courses offered through The League of Kitchens. The League of Kitchens features classes in which immigrants will teach culinary techniques and recipes brought with them from their homelands such as the Argentinian Cooking w/Mirta class, in which students will learn how to make pillowy gnocchi, fresh pesto sauce and an avocado salad. If that isn’t your preference, consider making chicken ouzi in the Lebanese Online Workshop #2 with Jeanette or maybe a gulai udang ala padang (an aromatic coconut curry with shrimp and potatoes) in the Indonesian Cooking with Shandra course.

Tastings and Events

Sometimes, you might not be particularly interested in making food, but you are interested in getting food or drinks. While you could go to a restaurant, you could also enroll in one of the many food-tasting courses offered in NYC. These courses offer participants the chance to have a guided food or drink experience overseen by an expert in their craft while they learn about the history and science behind whatever it is that they are sampling. While wine and cheese tasting and beer tastings are the most common options, you can also find spirit-tasting classes and even olive oil or bread-tasting classes.

Murray's Cheese is one of the oldest cheesemonger shops in NYC, and they are one of the largest importers and purveyors of rare and artisan cheeses in the country. In addition to being a large-scale cheese shop, Murray’s Cheese regularly hosts in-person courses for students to sample their wares and learn more about the world of cheese. In the Cheese 101 course, students will learn the science behind cheese making and how different kinds of cheeses are produced and aged. This course is an ideal introduction to the world of artisanal cheeses, and it is great for beginners looking to experience fine cheese for the first time. If you want to add a drink to the event, consider the Tour of Europe—Wine & Cheese Pairing course, which will see students pairing four European cheeses and wines with one another. Through this, students will learn how cheese and wine pairings are selected, and they will learn about the unique climate and agriculture of the country that shapes the cheese and wine that they produce.

If you are looking for a spirit-tasting event, consider Kings County Distillery’sWhiskey Tasting Class. This event will see students sampling a collection of five of the distillery’s craft whiskeys, including straight bourbon, peated bourbon, bottled in bond bourbon, chocolate whiskey and a seasonal infusion. Participants will learn how whiskey is made, what makes different kinds of whiskeys unique and how the mash and aging process gives whiskey their unique flavor and texture. The course concludes with a trip to the distillery’s bar to give participants more opportunities to sample the craft whiskey. A “Top Shelf” Distillery Tour is also available for participants looking to sample rarer, limited-allocation whiskeys and moonshines.

If you want to learn how to make more elaborate spirit drinks to sample, consider enrolling in a course like CoCuSocial’sClassic and Creative Cocktails course. In this class, students will work with a professional mixologist to hand-make three classic cocktails: a Martini, a Margarita and an Old Fashioned. This course offers students the opportunity to learn the science behind mixology and the process that goes into crafting cocktails, going over issues like how spirits are balanced with sweeteners, when (and why) to shake or stir, and what bitters and garnishes do for a drink. Once you’ve completed this course, you’ll have ample opportunities to start crafting your own cocktails at home or just recreate these three drinks for family and friends.

Tech Classes

While not always as amusing as a cooking class or an art seminar, learning tech skills can be a great way to build your resume and become more competitive in the job market. You could enroll in a career-focused course that aims to help you break into a new field or you could enroll in a class that teaches a specific skill so that you can expand on your present employment opportunities in less time. Regardless of your long-term career goals, there are tech classes in NYC that can help you reach them.

Noble Desktop is an NYC-based tech education provider that offers career-focused training for students looking to break into the field of tech, coding or design. Their classes are taught by expert instructors who are present to provide students with real-time assistance and feedback, and all of the classes center on real-world applications of skills and technologies. In courses like their FinTech Bootcamp, students will prepare for new careers in the financial services industry as they learn how to use data analytics and forecasting tools like Python and SQL and data visualization tools like Tableau. Students looking for a more accelerated program can consider enrolling in a course like the Intro to Python Programming course, which teaches students the data science and web design functionalities of Python, the most popular programming language in the world. Both of these courses are ideal for beginners without prior programming experience.

Students may also consider learning to code or design in courses offered by NYC Career Centers. Located in Manhattan, this school offers a range of programming and tech courses for students looking to start their careers fresh or revitalize their skills in an effort to become more competitive in the job market. If you are looking to become a professional digital artist or graphic designer, you can enroll in the Graphic Design Certificate program and learn how to create stunning works of art using InDesign, Photoshop and Illustrator. In addition to getting hands-on experience, you’ll work on real-world projects that can be added to your professional portfolio, and you’ll be able to take advantage of one-on-one mentorship sessions. If you are looking to just get your feet wet in terms of learning design, you may want to consider a course like the Premiere Pro Bootcamp, in which you’ll learn how to use Adobe’s Premiere Pro video editing software to edit video content for personal or professional projects.

Professional Classes

Another way to build your career options and to make your life easier is to enroll in a professional skills development class in NYC. These classes are ideal places to learn the kind of hard tech skills that will pay dividends in a wide range of career paths, and they can teach you the soft skills needed to work in interpersonal or managerial roles. These courses are great ways to build marketable skills and increase your long-term earning potential.

If you are looking to climb the ranks at your company, you are likely to want to learn managerial skills, and The American Management Association is there to help you with certifications and training courses. They offer a range of courses, including their Certified Professional in Management Exam Prep Course, which provides students with all of the skills training they need to be confident in their ability to pass the AMA Certified Professional in Management™ exam. In this course, students will get practical, hands-on experience applying management theory and skills in practice. The exam is not included as part of the course.
