Gardening is a wonderful gift and the ultimate in self care. It reconnects you with the earth and allows you to take control of your own nutritious, organic food. Now that most of us are working from home, it’s a great time to start.
Not long ago in the United States, most homes had bountiful front gardens that grew herbs, flowers, and vegetables. These gardens served as a way for households to have bountiful fresh fruits, flowers, and food.
With the invention of modern appliances and long distance travel of vegetables and factory farms, a concentrated effort was made to dissuade Americans from growing gardens. Popular magazines portrayed lawns as the ultimate in modern luxury and gardens a throwback to an impoverished past that was no longer relevant.
What we were left with was an abundance of low nutrient, pre packaged foods grown with chemicals and lawns that are basically ecological deserts. Did you know that conventionally grown food has 80% less vitamins than the food our grandparents ate? It’s true.
What we forget is those gardens were all organic gardens. Once picked, vegetables and fruits start to lose their nutrients. Plants and flowers heal. Just working in a garden heightens your mood and fills you with joy. All the food you grow can be organic, nutrient dense and healthy.
One of the things I love the most is variety. By growing your own garden, you have access to fruits and vegetables not commonly sold on the market. It is also a pleasure to steward your plants into bountiful meals.
We break down the types of gardens and I show you the advantages and disadvantages of each. We talk about soil and why it is so important, containers, raised beds, and planters. I also discuss succession planting and share with you some basic schedules for planting vegetables and herbs.
This is a live class where gardening is demonstrated in real time in an actual garden. I will be available for Q&A to answer questions you may have about your own little homestead.
The school reserve the right to cancel a class due to low attendance at anytime. In the event of a class cancellation, you will be notified and receive store credit for the full value of the class.
