This collaborative book club will be designed holistically around the needs of the group by Christina Michelle, founder and Learning Specialist of EmPath Learning. Groups vary between 2-6 students and integrate the needs of the learners through a rigorous intake process. Perhaps your ideal group is intended to inspire and or repair a student’s relationship with reading. Perhaps you need to work on SAT vocabulary, college readiness, or social skills. Maybe you want to get ahead and target particular CCSS objectives; the sky's the limit. Picture being able to speak with your child’s English teacher and advocate their social-emotional needs before they select a text. Imagine being in the loop via live reports throughout their novel units. No need to picture, simply register. All books and materials are included.
This club will be focusing on feminist theory, and introduce the idea of "intersectionality" through reading Chimamanda Achebe's, "We Should All Be Feminists," and reading, "Refridgerator Monologues," By Katherynn Valente with a feminist lens. Students will participate in written reflection, discussion, and a culminating essay.
INTAKE PROCESS:
- I intake the families/students to gain valuable insight to guide me in developing the club.
- I administer a comprehension conversation and choose from a small parent approved menu of texts with the learners.
- I analyze data from the initial session and form custom goals for the learners which address needs and gaps in comprehension.
- Implement a series of hour-long sessions which focus on close-reading protocols, engaging discussions, and writing about reading.
