John Gilman will host this deep dive in the terroirs of Savigny-lès-Beaune. John’s insights on the wines of Burgundy come from decades of traveling and writing about the region in his newsletter “View From the Cellar”. Savigny-lès-Beaune “at the side of Beaune”, is the name invariably tied to the wines of the village. The commune has multiple soils and exposures making it fascinating to explore. The two main areas are divided by a small stream called the Rhoin. On the Beaune side the vineyards are Marconnets, Jarrons, and Narbantons. These are richer wines of the village with a pronounced earthiness, they are the most concentrated Savignys reminiscent of a good Pommard or a village Vosne-Romanée. Across the valley on the Pernand side the vineyards Serpentières, Lavières, and Vergelesses offer a lighter yet perfumed intensity.
The gout de terroir has a distinct minerality balanced by soft strawberry fruit. No matter which area the wines come from they all have an uncanny ability to age but can also be rewarding when young. There are some whites produced but the greatest wines of the village are red. This fun and informative tasting will enhance your knowledge of the excellent red wines of Beaune.
