Description

Everything you need to know to be the best-educated grocery shopper and cook.

This valuable food education + grocery shopping workshop -- led by HCNY founder Jennifer Clair -- is designed to help home cooks make the best food choices in the grocery store, from the produce to the freezer aisle and everything in between.

School Notes:

For NYC In-Person Classes:

You’ll receive a complete recipe packet and enjoy a full sit-down meal at the end of class with your classmates. Our classes are BYOB, and you are welcome to bring a bottle to enjoy at the sit-down meal (not including our baking or dessert classes).

Our classes are hands-on, coupled with demonstration-style teaching. Everyone is situated at their own cutting board/chef’s knife station around a large wooden work table that accommodates the whole class (10 people max). We work together as a group, with the chef at the head of the table.

We focus on knife skills, preparing ingredients for cooking, and we strive to find every opportunity to offer you a hands-on experience at the stove and at your station, all within the spatial parameters of a single stove/family-style kitchen. We ask for volunteers to assist in all cooking.

Refund Policy

For Public Classes:

We have a firm 3 business days cancellation policy (for credit only) to ensure that we have enough time to re-fill your seat with another student.

Please note: Boot Camps require 6 business days notice to be rescheduled.

While it is not in our nature to say no, we are simply not able to accommodate last-minute illnesses or work-related conflicts. However, you are always welcome to send someone in your place, because we understand that these things do happen. Classes are not refundable.

 For Culinary Boot Camps:

Because of the volume of Boot Camps we offer, we cannot offer make-up classes to anyone who misses a single class, no matter the reason, as it happens too often and we cannot handle that volume of make-ups.  Once you book your boot camp, make sure to mark (and prioritize) all the dates in your calendar.

Because we know how disappointing it is to miss a class, you are always welcome to send a friend in your place (just send us their name ahead of class), and perhaps insist that they cook you dinner as repayment.

In any event where a customer wants to cancel their enrollment and is eligible for a full refund, a 5% processing fee will be deducted from the refund amount.

 Thank you for understanding!

  • What to Eat + How to Grocery Shop

This class was very informative. It was a lot of information to take in for a two hour course. I wish it was a little bit longer or broken into two classes. I also would like to learn more about reading labels. Overall the class is well worth the money!
  • What to Eat + How to Grocery Shop

The class was informative and touched on many areas I’m interested in and already familiar with. However, I did learn some things I did not know before. All in all, a great class to get someone started on their way to healthier eating and more home cooking.

Very intense class-at first no chance to ask questions, but eventually there was Q&A, which was great!
  • What to Eat + How to Grocery Shop

So great! Incredibly comprehensive, Jennifer has an enormous wealth of knowledge about everything food, ingredients, carbon footprints, and so much more. She's an amazing teacher, and the reading material you get to bring home is beautifully succinct yet touches on literally everything, including what vegetables to buy organic, how to store different foods, even recipes to inspire you. I haven't even covered one tenth of what you get to learn, it's that amazingly comprehensive. Gives you the perfect foundation to go forth and trust your tools as a home-cooking chef, don't hesitate and take this class!
  • What to Eat + How to Grocery Shop

Honestly it was a great class overall. It was helpful and she gave out a lot of information on the products and things we should look for when we buy at the grocery store.
  • What to Eat + How to Grocery Shop

I learn so much and many terms were clarify for me. It was a very informative class taught by an expert who is passionate about her craft.

I was interested in learning food labelling, learning good value bad fats, and more about cooking oils. This is a good place to start. But as a vegan would not recommend- the class talks about clean eating yet eating meat and dairy (anything animal based) is not clean eating. Also, some people have allergies tomcertsin things, as did another student who was lactose intolerant. It would be great to offer alternatives for those who have allergies to certain foods.. Teacher had great enthusiasm.
