This is an intermediate course that combines the wheel and hand-building techniques. Students should be familiar with the clay medium. They do not need to know how to use a wheel in order to participate, but they will NOT be taught how to use a wheel in this class. Those students who can not use a wheel will only be allowed to work with hand building techniques.
This 6 week course will demonstrate various techniques used to create ceramic art. We will explore the hand-building techniques such as slab work, coils, pinch pots, and how to join clay. We will also explore finishing and manipulating wheel thrown pieces by hand-building and finally various decorative techniques such as sgrafitto, mishima and nerikomi.
Techniques will come up through various projects such as teapots, buildings, sculpture or any other unique ideas that students wish to tackle. Students are encouraged to come prepared and explore their own project ideas and creativity.
This course is best suited on an ongoing basis for ceramic students who want to expand their skill set.
Includes clay and glazes, all tools, storage and 18 hours of additional studio bench time.
Firing Fees are paid separately in the 5th week prior to firing. The firing fees are 4 cents per cubic inch and include both the bisque and glaze firing of each piece.
