Class Description

Description

What you'll learn in this on location photography class:

In this workshop we explore the fascinating area and the unique ethnic community of Manhattan: Chinatown. Participants learn the tips and hints for successful "street & portrait photography." At the same time acquiring the knowledge of the camera basic, the various functions and camera settings to gain greater control. By the end of the two hour class Participants are proficient in Manual Mode settings taking more successful photographs.

Each Composition in the Field class begins with a brief introduction with Participants take walking instruction through one of a variety of photogenic locales (determined prior to the class). Participants put to practice the workshops lesson during this two hour session.

During the class, students learn and apply new concepts like panning and depth of field. Another skill is the understanding of the correct use of selective focus to add another dimension to their photos... literally. Much of the time, depth of field is used to accentuate beautiful natural scenes. Another creative use is in Portrait Photography where the focus is only on the eyes. It can be used in any situation to create a more interesting and complex image.

For these strategies, I give instruction on both the fundamental mechanics of the technique and ways to apply it to improve the everyday photograph.

Throughout the workshop lessons the participants are given exercises to increase their “Art of Seeing Through the Lens” as well as ways to look at the composition of their images by gaining an understanding of the transition of seeing from a multidimensional world to the camera. Images captured in the camera are expressed to the viewer in 2 dimensions length and width. The Art of Seeing covers techniques to create illusions of space, making the right lens choices, camera angles and light modifying effects.

With my over 25 years of experience as a photography, printer and professional photographer I will guide the Participants through each step of the process in a fun two-hour session.  Over the entire workshop series they will learn to shoot strategically, getting more interesting photos and come away with a foundation to improve their photographs in the future, whether for work and or pleasure.

I thought Marla offered a great mix of both the art and science of photography. She guided me to improve my "eye" so I could more quickly see potential shots, and also helped me better appreciate how to shutter speed and aperture to my advantage. I appreciate that she took the time to understand what my photographic style is, and helped me to improve that, rather than trying to get me to photograph in a traditionally "perfect" way. I also appreciated that she took the time to help me better understand my camera controls - even Googling to help me figure out some buttons that I should have known myself.

the instructor is very pleasant, interesting and well spirited. she had difficulties understanding what i needed to learn, and understanding my camera. i was looking for a more intuitive, hands-on approach, and she focused instead on technological aspects. i cannot say i learned in this class; i learned less than in other more experiential classes i have taken.

I loved this class! . Marla was very nice and answered any question we had. She walked us through how to find those opportunities to get a great shot and at the end she will give you a feedback on your pictures. I would take any class with her again.

I had such a great time on this workshop! Instructor Marla Mossman was terrific, and offered helpful advice on both the technical aspects of operating my DSLR as well as scouting interesting subjects and locations for street photography. She did a wonderful job tailoring the workshop to my skill level and background.

I was the only student that which made it a big plus for me. We were off to a good start in terms of putting into action what we had discussed about what makes a great photograph. Marla asked me to take different kinds of photos based on our discussion and then went around Chinatown. The only suggestion I would make is to spend more time guiding the student what will make a better photo while shooting (not just in the beginning) because that was more helpful to me.

I loved it! Looking forward to meeting with this wonderful woman again. At first, I didn't realize that I was the only student (That being said I'm the only crazy one who decided to go out shooting mid winter in the frost) but nonetheless the professor showed up, taught me things that I didn't know about my own camera, was very personal, professional, kind and wise. Also is a great photographer and has some guts when it comes to asking people for pictures with street photography. Thank you a million times over!

Being prepared for the decisive moment has always been an issue for me. Marla taught me how to prep beforehand by scouting a location, helping me decide which manual settings would work best for the scene, and most of all, to be patient as we waited for photo opportunities. Thank you for your advice and guidance.
