Hilma Af Klint at the Guggenheim

Though you’ve likely never heard of the Swedish artist, Hilma af Klint, she may have been Europe’s first abstract painter. 

As early as 1906, she began creating nonrepresentational compositions, years before Kandinsky, Malevich or Mondrian. Fearing that the public wouldn’t be ready for her work, she stipulated that it not be exhibited until 20 years after her death, in 1944. 

Now, seventy years later, she is finally being given a U.S. retrospective, granting us a unique opportunity to explore her “paintings for the future.”
