Calligraphy

Known by many names, though most commonly as Gothic and Old English, the blackletter style is familiar to anyone who has ever picked up a fantasy novel; the script holds a joint sway over the fantasy genre with the uncial style.

In this two-part workshop, we will look briefly at blackletter in its historical context as an alphabet before we begin to tackle it as a viable, living, modern script.

In the first workshop, we will review the basic rules of pen movement before looking at blackletter examples both historical and modern, and then develop practice exercises to master the script.

In the second workshop, we will work on spacing, and principles of self-study to pursue blackletter beyond the class. Blackletter: a minute to learn...a lifetime to master!
