  • Unity Basics: From Nothing to Flappy Bird in 2 Hours

Reviewed by Michelle P. on 4/23/2020
This is a fast-paced course that gives the learner a glimpse into what Unity is capable of. It was a real eye-opener that encouraged me to learn more on my own. The instructor was knowledgeable and able to answer questions on the fly. I’m giving the class four stars rather than five because students need to be warned that the class is best viewed with a dual monitor setup. Don’t try this on a 12” ultra book. A single monitor setup will hamper your ability to view the class and work in Unity at the same time.

I couldn't find the class, the location was very vague in the description. No one answered when I tried to contact them to find out where it was. Total waste of time.
  • Breaking into Game Design with Unity

The instructor was great and I was able to learn a lot. Unfortunately, in the class description there was no mention to bring your laptop which made it difficult to follow.
  • Designing Games for Impact

    Anonymous review on 7/6/2017
Waste of time and money. The teacher was completely unprepared. The class barely even touched on the supposed theme of "learning to design socially meaningful and artistic games" - the teacher instead wasted the first half hour on explaining extremely basic visual concepts like how curvy lines versus straight lines might make you feel... how circles are the opposite of triangles, etc., using a basic PowerPoint presentation she said she found somewhere online, and then showing us a couple of clips on YouTube that vaguely demonstrated some of these principles. Why? I've no idea. She did eventually begin to show us two examples of "serious games," but had to cut both demos short because her iPad was running low on battery. She did not provide meaningful commentary on either game, or mention what lessons might be learned.

I liked the class and found it useful to being making gifs I also learned of several new useful tools to make them. I would recommend that it's included attendees should bring a laptop with Photoshop. I know it may seem like an obvious requirement, but I aware of this until I arrived at the class.
  • Creating an Art Portfolio for the Game Industry

    Anonymous review on 3/18/2016
Very cool people, very nice instructor. And it's almost worth it just to go into the cool futuristic Microsoft building, depending on how far you are. The elevators go to the floor you need without pressing buttons, it's the closest I'll probably ever get to Hogwarts. But the info you'll get out of the class can be summed up in this actual quote: "If you've done lighting for, say, Pixar for five years, and you want to do lighting at someplace like, uh, say, Dreamworks, what you'll do is, is when you're writing your resume, you will put your *job title*, whether that's (misc. examples), and then under or next to it, the years you worked there in that job (misc. examples) and then you would write what the job tasks included, uh, *with words*. And that.. that will tell them you have the skills they're looking for, because if you were working there for that time then presumably you have some, uh, experience." This is unfortunately not 100% word-for-word because I waited until after the class to write it down, but it's as close as I could remember. Very little info, very few portfolio examples and the ones we saw were not examples to follow at all. I actually came out feeling more confident because I felt like the little knowledge I had before was more significant. Also, the class didn't have a break to chat or hang out, which would have been cool, and we unfortunately couldn't talk much afterwards since the building seemed to be closing at the end of the class. Overall, the price is low but I wouldn't say it's even worth the time. Go if you're gonna be around Times Square and want to see the awesome elevator after the wax museum, but this is a case of "you get what you pay for".
