Reviews for Paper Classes in NYC

Paper Classes in NYC are rated 4.5 stars based on 343 verified reviews from actual CourseHorse.com purchasers.

  • The class was very good. The teacher was punctual, knowledgeable, helpful and organized. We had plenty of space to work. Marbling paper can be messy. It would be worth it to sign up again, just to have a convenient space to make more prints.
  • I love my papers which I use to wrap gifts. Jenny is extremely knowledgeable and creative. She handled a large crowd professionally, teaching and encouraging each of us along.
  • Terrific instructor, Chelsey Pettijohn - and great class atmosphere. thanks!
  • The class was an intimate group which allowed it to be tailored to us as individuals. The instructor was very knowledgeable and I learned a lot about how to express emotion in a mixed media piece.
  • The Paper Marbling workshop was fantastic, it's so much fun and the instructor was very knowledgeable and taught us great techniques. You get all the supplies and everything is very well organized.
  • I've had so much fun learning all the marbling techniques. The instructor was well organized and very nice.
  • Was a wonderful way to spend a beautiful day in Dumbo
  • I xxxxx this For five hours while practicing making marbleized paper…, I felt as if tho I had been transported into a place of beauty… of serenity and peace. It was so amazing.
  • My experience with the paper marbling class blew me away. Some of us students were new to the art and others were repeat customers who had taken the course before and wanted to hone their practice. In my opinion, the class was the correct size and duration for what we were learning, which Sheryl is clearly very passionate about. You will not find a more qualified teacher in the skill and her resume speaks for itself, yet she was also patient, instructive, and handled all our questions and slip ups gracefully. She balanced explaining the chemistry of the process with the artistry of it well; we were sent home with thorough instructions on how to do this at home, exactly what types of materials are needed, and so on. The art space itself was well-equipped to host the class; the only wrinkle was that I wish the signage and directions to the correct floor and room were slightly more detailed and clear, as the building is large. We had access to quality paints, utensils, and even some fresh paper Sheryl made for us herself! All in all, one of the best birthday presents I've ever given myself! I only wish it was a regular class each week or month instead of a one-time 6 hour commitment, as I would be keen to develop more skill with continued guidance.
  • The instructor was knowledgeable and super friendly! I learned a lot:)
  • The class was well organized and very informative. The working environment was open and creative with the instructor always on hand to lend a hand if necessary. Everyone was encouraged to be individual in their work. It was a great evening with good company!
  • Such a great night, with expert instruction and super fun vibes. Thank you!!!!
  • Great teacher! Had a great time! P.
  • Enjoy the class. Teacher was enthusiastic to show us the technique and appropriate amount of time was given to make the artwork.
  • No one else showed up to this class so I was lucky enough to have a private session with the teacher. I learned a tremendous amount in 3 hours and left with what felt like an entire body of work. The teacher had great respect for the history and traditional techniques used in suminagashi and demonstrated a variety of techniques. She gave very specific advice on what materials to use at home and where to get them. Thoroughly enjoyed all 3 hours of this class and would take it again.
  • Very engaging- took the class with my 12 year old, and she gives 5 stars!
  • Marbled Cards

The class was relaxing, meditative, and non-intimidating. Kelly, the instructor, walks through the process in a fun and interactive way making it appear 'easy'. She and everyone in the class were kind and supportive of everyone's artistic journey and expression. It was a wonderful way to spend an evening connecting with new people. I thought the time would be too long, and it turns out I could have sat there for much longer!
  • class was cancelled by instructor, but I’ll try again another day.
  • What a great way to disconnect and do something creative for a few hours! I was new to bookbinding, but the class is structured in a way that makes it easy to follow along. Arjun and Rose were great, the space is very warm and approachable, and the sparkling water and peanut M&Ms were a huge plus too! Definitely recommend...
  • It was great and so nice to have it at the 92nd Street Y—instructor was great!
  • This class was fantastic! The instructor had everything prepared from the day before. We all had fun learning this creative and beautiful process. I am an art teacher and I took this class for professional development. I was surprised to learn about how much labor goes into the setup. Thank you for sharing your love of paper marbleizing. I will definitely be back!!
  • Large Format Marbling (Weekend Intensive)

Natalie Stopka is an excellent teacher and the class was fun and interesting and productive. We accomplished a lot in one day. What a perfect way to spend a Sunday.
  • I love the class which has a lot interaction and fun. Natalie introduced in very detail and demonstrated in a proper way which is good to students.
  • Sheryl is awesome as always. The acrylic marbling class was so fantastic that I had to come back for more. I find suminagashi more playful and it's great to learn new techniques.
  • Large Format Suminagashi

EXTREMELY informative. I've taken over 3 Suminagashi marbling classes, this has to take the cake. I came away with +10 techniques to add to my Suminagashi marbling toolbox. I highly recommend purchasing the extra yards of fabric. So much freedom in this class and time to explore using the techniques and create great pieces.
  • Large Format Suminagashi

    Natalie is a great teacher.
  • This was a delightful class. A brief history of the art, an introduction to techniques and a chance to make your own.
  • Loved this class. Mustapha is a wonderful teacher. So much fun and learned a lot. The small class size gave everyone a chance to make two pieces. Was just as interesting to marble the paper as it was to watch others. I look forward to taking more classes with him in the future.
  • The instructor was very knowledgeable, thoughtful, patient and kind — we had plenty of time to try out different techniques. Super fun class!
  • Mustafa was an excellent instructor. He was patient and modeled several different designs for us. By the time my friend and I got up to try it on our own I felt very confident in my abilities. I am very happy with the Ebru art I created during the class and hope to do more on my own.
  • This class is a deep dive into marbling. The instructor is extremely knowledgeable. She even prepared more paper for all of us since we kept making so many marbling prints and going through the paper. You make so many prints! 100% worthwhile and fun.
  • After Workshop: Color Theory

    Wonderful teacher! Wonderful class!
  • Large Format Marbling (Weekend Intensive)

Natalie Stopka definitely knows the craft of Marbling and relayed her knowledge easily and with clarity. We worked, but the end results of the days activities was well worth the effort Natalie put forward. Thank you Natalie.
  • Large Format Marbling (Weekend Intensive)

    Well run and informative.
  • Stephanie is a awesome teacher! Very friendly, professional and is very good at what she is doing. She made the class very enjoyable!
  • Super enjoyable and such a great intro to Turkish culture and Ebru marbling. The instructor is passionate about this art and is patient with all of the participants. I highly recommend this course for both adults and children. At the end, it was such a treat to have Turkish tea and drink it while learning about book culture and the Ottoman empire, brought me back to when I visited Istanbul.
  • Loved learning about Ebru. Mustafa is a fine instructor and I hope to attend another session at some point.
  • The teacher was awesome! The course subject was great..
  • Very calming and fun. Go with a friend.
  • Extraordinarily beautiful two hour class. Mustafa slowly explained the history and tools used for the “face of water”==Turkish watermarbling as we nine participants were able to snack on great popcorn, tea, and coffee. He demonstrated the possibilities for the colors and designs creating three paintings. We then each were able to do one on our own although he would help with pulling the paper off of the water if one so desired. Definitely, a course I will return to with friends.
  • So fun, some informative! I would take this class over and over. You get at least 10 prints and the instructor pays attention to your techniques and provides great feedback. So fun!
  • Intro to Book Arts (One Day Class)

Natalie is an absolute wealth of knowledge and a truly wonderful teacher. Highly recommend this course! Loved all of her information on the history of book-binding while we were completing tasks - and her advice for my specific project was invaluable. Very grateful - thanks Natalie!
  • I expected a very craftsy class, but instead found a real art class with artists of all abilities who were given freedom and professional support to pursue individualized projects using various types of paper , in varied ways. It was challenging, involving and extremely interesting. The teacher was particularly attentive and supportive.
  • After Workshop: Coptic Book Binding

Awesome course. Learned a lot. Can’t wait till I take the next one.
  • Bookbinding II: Beginning Hard Cover

I was very happy with the class. There were not a lot of people, so Beth was able to get around to everybody. We made three different types of books, in two days. I am hoping to make these with my high school students, as a club activity, next year.
  • Natalie is a wonderful teacher and is fun and funny. I would take any class that she teaches.
  • Great introduction. Small-size class. Earnest, kind, soft-spoken instructor. Turkish tea and cookies served.
  • Adam and his friend loved the glass. Came home with a bag of stuff that they made together. We even arrived 15 mins early and were seated straight away! Thank you!
  • Paper Engineering Fundamentals

Shawn was a patient and helpful instructor with great expertise in detailing and designing pop-up books. I really enjoyed the class.
  • Instructor was very encouraging and helpful. Would highly recommend this class. The results are amazing even for a novice.

Discover the Best Papercraft Classes in NYC

In addition to papermaking, papercraft includes a huge variety of other crafts that deploy paper as their principal medium. Today, papercraft is immensely popular across the world because paper is readily available, versatile, and easy to work with. Whether you’re a child learning numbers and colors from cut shapes or a professional maker with a handmade brand, paper is a medium you can transform.

While all papercrafts utilize paper, the end products can often end up looking completely different, and that’s because there are countless ways to manipulate paper for different effects. To name just a few, common papercraft techniques include cutting, tearing, layering, folding, curling, gluing, dying, painting, and mixing with wet ingredients to create a paste. In addition to flat crafts like cards and stationery, papercraft is popular for creating three-dimensional objects such as miniature dollhouse furniture, sculptures, and wedding bouquets.

While papercraft has grown into a global phenomenon, it originally started in ancient Egypt with the simple invention of papyrus, or paper. Along with using paper for writing and painting, ancient artists created ornamental boxes covered in intricate curled paper, known today as quilling. As paper spread throughout the world, new art forms sprung up: folded origami in Japan, papier-mâché in China, and papel picado in Mexico.

Today, papercraft has expanded to include bookbinding, decoupage, scrapbooking, paper layering, and machine die-cutting. In addition to its decorative value, papercraft is popular as a tactile teaching method in classrooms for young children. Like early Egyptians, many papercraft artists today make paper from scratch, and enjoy working with a wide variety of different paper types.

Why You Should Learn Papercraft in NYC

You don’t need to develop advanced art skills before you can start learning papercraft, and many types of papercraft are even easy enough for kids to learn. In contrast to mediums like metal, wood, or ceramic, which have a much steeper learning curve, paper is also much cheaper to come by. While handmade papers and fine art papers can be a bit pricier, they’re still significantly less expensive than full-sized painting canvases, fine textiles, and metal.

If that’s not enough, papercraft is filled with benefits for your mental and physical health. In addition to encouraging creativity, papercraft can give you a stronger understanding of geometry, which makes it an important element of children’s education. In addition, papercraft is a particularly useful skill to learn if you want to improve your hand-dexterity, as folding, cutting, and working intricate details increases fine motor skills.

Thanks to its many avenues for expressing feelings, papercraft is sometimes treated as a therapy activity. With the tactile feel of paper in your hands and your creative wheels spinning, you’ll likely find that papercraft decreases anxiety, increases self-worth, and aids concentration. Moreover, as a personal growth activity, paper crafting is a great way to increase your sense of self-efficacy. For those who struggle with loneliness, papercraft can provide opportunities to form new relationships at local clubs and craft fairs.

If you’re looking for an additional source of income, papercraft can even become a side hustle. Creative markets such as Etsy and Shopify make it possible for makers to sell their handmade goods online without needing their own website or marketing. In addition, some popular papercraft bloggers can make an additional sum by hosting paid advertisements on their blogs.

In-Person Papercraft Classes & Schools in NYC

If you’re a social butterfly who wants to make friends with other creatives, learning papercraft onsite isn’t a bad way to go. Join classmates in a fully-stocked classroom where you’ll learn from an experienced papercraft instructor. In addition to expert demonstrations, there will be scads of opportunities to ask questions and get feedback on your projects. As a result, you’ll learn more quickly than you would by yourself.

As a direct benefit of your fully-stocked classroom, you likely won’t need to purchase many papercraft supplies. However, if you’d like to collect some for home use, your instructor can be a great resource when it comes to learning about the best paper types, tool brands, and artist supply stores. Don’t be shy when it comes to asking questions. Visit CourseHorse to kick off your hobby education with an in-person papercraft course in NYC.
