The Active Citizen was founded in February 2016 by Kara and David, two twenty-somethings living in New York City. They realized that many young adults in NYC care deeply about social issues, but do not necessarily have an outlet to engage with the topics that they care about.
Inspired by their challenges in finding a like-minded community in NYC after college, they created The Active Citizen to encourage young people to connect and grow through a shared commitment to a better New York.
The Active Citizen holds roundtable discussions, hosts speaker events, and creates volunteer opportunities intended to educate and inspire young people in the city.
Types of events:
Roundtable discussions: A facilitator leads a stimulating discussion on a timely and sometimes controversial topic. Previous topics include gun violence, police-community relations, and educational equality.
Speaker events: A leader from a non-profit organization or subject matter expert speaks to the group on a specific topic. At a recent speaker event, Fwd.US, an immigration reform organization, talked to members about the state of immigration reform in America and shared stories of undocumented immigrants.
Connecting through volunteerism: Members form meaningful connections through volunteering throughout the city. Volunteer events help members form friendships and connect while giving back to their communities. The Active Citizen Continuum The Active Citizen Continuum is a way for members to evaluate their journey to becoming Active Citizens.

This was such a humbling experience. Myself, daughter & niece volunteered to feed the homeless youths and we enjoyed the experience. It was well organized and they utilized all volunteers. The clients were respectful and grateful. I'm looking forward to volunteering again.
