Music Beans was founded by two good friends-Yu-Chen, Mimi, Lin and Yawen Cheng. Both from Taiwan, Mimi and Yawen share a lot in common. They both began their piano lesson at a very young ages (age 4), studied in gifted music programs in Taiwan, and performed in various countries. Most importantly, they LOVE working with children in the musical world. In 2005, they reconnected in Manhattan through their passion in music education and worked in the same music studio (pre-Music Beans).

After years of collaboration in music teaching, they have developed a bond not just professionally but personally. In the year of 2010, with great devotion and enthusiasm, they founded Music Beans to fulfill their dream of having a creative place for music teaching and learning!

At Music Beans, all we want for our students throughout the program is to have a whole experience of music learning. Music lessons are so much more than just beat-counting, recognizing notes, practicing techniques..etc. We believe that by providing a curriculum that is tailored to fit our students’ potential and create alternative methods presented by our faculty, our students will grow to reach their maximum musical potential and establish a life long music learning experience.

Our faculty consists of musicians from around the world with distinguished performing experiences and references. Most importantly, they are not only performers but also educators. By utilizing everyone's strengths, we formed a strong team to provide programs for every student. Please come visit us to find out more about what Music Beans has to offer!

At Music Beans, we create a fun, energetic, and creative learning environment for our students. We believe that creative interactions and engaging learning environment are critical to children’s success in music learning. Incorporating Dalcroze approach, the Gordon Music Learning Theory and multicultural music enrichment, Music Beans’ curricula value and embed the principles of creative movement, developmentally appropriate practice (DAP)& sequential learning, critical thinking, world sounds, and an engaging environment. We believe music learning should not just be the beat counting and technical development ; music learning should be a life long experience--- fun, creative and artistic!!

Creative Movement

Our classes value the influences of rhythmic movement in children’s musical development. Both of our applied and group classes consist of kinesthetic activities to accommodate children’s inclination towards dancing. Through moving to the motion of speed, weight, space, and flow in activities, children experience music creatively and express themselves artistically.

DAP & Sequential Learning

We believe children will learn more efficiently and voluntarily when they are in a musical program based on Developmentally Appropriate Practice. The concept of developmentally appropriate practices refers to providing an environment, methodologies, and content (e.g. materials & activities) that match a child’s level of development. At Music Beans, we value DAP and design our classes with sequential steps based on our students’ musical development in order to facilitate their success in music learning.

Critical Thinking

Developing the ability of critical thinking is important in our philosophy of music learning. At Music Beans, we not only ask our students to master the technique required for music making, but most importantly, we foster their way of artistic expression by nurturing them to compare sound qualities, styles, various ways of music playing and creative notation systems. Often, students carry this way of critical thinking developed at Music Beans to different areas of life.

World Sound

At Music Beans, students experience a diverse selection of musical repertoire from around the world whether it’s classical, modern, popular, or jazz music. We believe that by immersing our students in diverse styles of music, they will develop an open mind towards new sounds and expand their sound spectrum in the music world. This expanded sound spectrum will serve as a foundation in musical improvisation and composition.

Engaging & Fun

Our program is set to promote children's confidence and creativity through musical play and activities. We designed our classes not only to be instructional but most importantly, FUN!!! Everyone at Music Beans walks out of their classes with a huge smile on their faces!
