  • Michelle is a patient instructor and thoroughly explains the process and potential pitfalls of welding techniques in a clear and easy manner. Her studio is easy to get to and big and bright. I learned a lot in the one lesson and feel the small class size made personal instruction and technique correction possible. She is welcoming and kind- which helps immensely when diving into a new skill!
  • Would definitely take another class at this place, Great instructor!!
  • Highly recommend taking a class with Michelle. She's an incredible instructor and frankly a heck of a good hang. Felt safe, supported, and confident and walked away from class with a pretty rad jewellery holder I welded myself. Can't wait to do it again!
  • I loved this course. Michelle's teaching style is very calm, patient, and fun. I walked away feeling energized and excited to continue learning and experimenting with my newfound passion.
  • I loved the mig welding class! The teacher was super knowledgeable, clear at explaining and tailored the class to the participants experience and desires. The candle holder I built is the main feature of my dining room table and has sparked a lot of conversations.
  • Excellent class! Highly recommend! Michelle is an excellent teacher and you really walk away having learned a lot!
  • Such an amazing class! It felt great to be taught by such a patient and experienced welder. As a woman interested in welding it was awesome to be introduced to the craft by an empowered woman thriving in such a male dominated field. I will definitely be coming back soon!
  • Terrific instructor, Easy class Easy to understand and follow along. No stress and no fear. All equipment supplied. Safe . My advice don't walk, run to her class you will leave wanting more. Jimmy B.
  • Michelle was an excellent teacher, got us using the tools quickly and safely - and not before long we were tack welding and welding seams! It was a great way to get started and to have the attention of a pro who could correct technique as you're learning. I feel much more confident about using an arc welder. A+
  • It was not like a class rather an afternoon with a good friend , sharing an interest and learning something new at the same time. I never once felt uncomfortable or doubted myself. Everything she said we were going to do we did as if we knew we could. I would recommend it to anyone, I think I learned more in those 2hrs than I thought I would. Don't hesitate to take this class, run. Jimmy Byrne
  • Great teacher! Very practical intro to stick welding. We were able to get enough orientation with the pros & cons, safety, and techniques to try it out and receive plenty of useful feedback. I feel confident enough to keep going forward!
  • Michelle's class was a perfect balance of educational and fun for a first time welding experience. She is very knowledgeable and was open to answering any questions we had, as well as taking her time showing us the proper techniques. I would absolutely recommend this to anyone whose curious about welding! A great way to learn hands on in a safe environment.
  • Chris was so knowledgeable and left so much room for learning and creative expression. The space is so cool. I will certainly be back
  • Amazing class, very informative and a lot of practice. Didn't know that I can learn so much in 2 hours. Teacher was great, knowledgeable and patient. Good guidance.
  • I absolutely loved the class and the skills that I have learned. Very informative and the teacher was amazing!
  • It was a very entertaining and insightful class. The instructor is very knowledgeable and takes the time to answer your questions thoroughly; and boy did i have a lot of them. My girlfriend and I had a lot of fun! Would definitely take another one of her classes.
  • This welding class exceeded my expectations. Michelle Greene was the perfect instructor. Her experience as a teacher and sculptor fit exactly what we needed.
  • One of the best courses I’ve taken! First off, Michelle is an incredible teacher and sculptor! I learned more about welding than I thought possible in just two hours. She’s very patient and knowledgeable and it was a lot of fun to get this kind of hands on experience with metalwork sculpture. Needless to say it was a great way to spend the weekend, and if you’re on the fence about signing up for this course DO IT!
  • Great class
  • My son and I had a great time. My son has experience welding, I am a total newbie. Michelle was an excellent teacher to us both. We learned a lot and we each made a very cool jewelry/key holder, both of which are already being put to good use! I can't recommend this class enough.
  • A+++++++++ Great instructor! I learned so much. A+++++++++
  • Michelle is incredible!!! What a great experience to have her teach us a 101 wielding class. Super recommended!!!
  • AMAZING class! Trust, I had absolutely no experience with welding. I work at a desk all day; this was a polar opposite of my day to day world. I was a bit nervous, but Michelle put us at ease quickly, explaining all the safety measures in place within the work area and equipment. There was so much intrigue with all the tools/equipment to see and touch, the time FLEW by! Her instructions were clear, her responses detailed and animated, she really kept our attention with ease. I learned even while watching her instruct the other student. The location itself was captivating, located at the historical Brooklyn Navy Yard with so much history and even some of Michelle's own functional art structures on display! I walked away with an extreme sense of accomplishment, and some new knowledge in this niche area. This was not just a class, but an EXPERIENCE.

  • Excellent class! You get to learn all aspects of MIG welding in a private setting. Michelle is great teacher a passionate about what she does. Definitely recommend
  • I absolutely LOVED this experience and could not recommend it more! It’s rare to find someone who is not only a fantastic and experienced artist with years of craft mastery up their sleeve; but also an exemplary professor. Michelle Greene was EXTREMELY patient, attentive, thorough, candid and welcoming. Her class is structured enough to have a good pacing, but flexible enough so that the teaching can be adapted to every students’ speed. I would recommend this for absolute beginners as well as more experienced welders who want to practice and widen their skills. In the end I could only feel inspired to continue working with metal, I hope I can keep on learning with Michelle, I will for sure be booking more lessons with her!
  • Michelle exceeded all expectations! She was so insightful and explained everything with such expertise. I felt extremely safe. The lesson was so fun and Michelle creates so many amazing works of art on her own! Will definitely go back to learn more.
  • It was an awesome experience Great instructor Great instructions I had a blast Must do it again Nelson
  • I am very happy with my experience! It was Excellent! Michelle was very knowledgeable and thorough! I had a great time and learned a lot in the process!
  • Such a great class for beginner welders. Michelle was lovely and extremely knowledgeable, safe and just fun to be around. Step by step learning, so easy to pick up and learn with her direction. Great date to bond with your partner and have some out of the ordinary fun in NYC.
  • Absolutely phenomenal experience!!!
  • Michelle's class was great! It was interesting to learn about the different kinds of welding processes, and Michelle has tons of real world experience both as an artist and in the welding industry. And of course getting to weld for the first time was amazing. The idea of welding was intimidating, but Michelle made it super approachable and safe, so it was a lot of fun. And my small metal sculpture lives on my wife's bedside table, which is a nice memento. Highly recommend the class!
  • Amazing welding class, instructions were very clear and detailed, definitely would recommend to anyone who wishes to try out arch welding as a beginner!
  • Very intense information packed class. After 2 hours you will know how to mig weld in addition you will understand other welding types. Michelle Green is a talented teacher
  • Great Class! Michelle was incredibly knowledgeable and has a huge wealth of expertise. Very small class size was great too, basically felt like a personal lesson. I'm definitely going to take her other courses in the near future.
  • The class was awesome!!! I have done a lot of cool things, this was the best. Michelle was extremely patient and knowledgeable.
  • Very very very thorough instructions and procedures. Very encouraging feedback instructor gives as well! Highly recommend
  • Michelle is not only an artist who teaches at art schools but also someone with a long resume of industrial welding experience. That means she can tune your class to variety of needs. If you are here for a date/experience, I've no doubt that you'll have a great time. She has every tool imaginable in the shop but will make it easy for to enjoy the fun part, after making sure you know the safety rules before you begin. In my case, I was hoping to have a rigorous session similar to what you would get in welding schools since I needed the skill for an upcoming art project, and I was more than happy with what I took away from the class. She drove straight into details of each component of the machine (the parameter settings, variety of wire materials and what they're used for etc.), and once safety protocols were understood, we got straight into welding practice while she pointed out the dos and donts, and gave advises for making things work for different type of materials. There was already an improvement in the skill during the short time. I went home w/ enough knowledge to purchase a welding machine and use it safely, but also felt that I wanted to come back for several more sessions - you get that when you know that you are working with a great teacher/mentor. Can't recommend her enough !
  • Michelle is excellent. Not only has she done it all in terms of welding but she’s got an artist’s heart. Whether you’re never welded or need to understand a specific technique Michelle’s got you covered.
  • I took the intro to Arc Welding class with Michelle and I had a great experience with her. The class lasted about 2 hours and for almost the entire 2 hours aside from getting familiar with the arc welding setup we were welding and Michelle was giving feedback. There are a lot of introductory videos online on YouTube but having an actual professional showing you the techniques in person is so much more enriching and once you walk out, you’ll have much more confidence when you’re practicing on and using your own welding machine. Michelle provides the welding PPE; masks, gloves, cotton sweater to go over your own clothes. Class sizes don’t go more than 2 people so you get a lot of attention and feedback from the instructor. At the end of the class she offered me to take home the pieces I practiced on so I could reference it later on. I’d recommend her class easily.
  • This was such a fun class, and Michelle is passionate about her craft. We were both a little nervous as we were first time welders but she made the experience so interesting and it is a really great couple's activity. Book if you love trying something new and unique with a loved one!
  • Amazing course. Michelle took us through all the different types of welders then we dove straight in to actual welding. It's fun, and by the end you definitely feel like you know the basics of how to weld.
  • The Class was fantastic! I needed to learn how to weld for an upcoming project and I was taught everything I needed to know. Do not hesitate to take this course if you want to learn the basics of welding
  • I loved the class. Michelle is a great teacher. Looking forward to taking a follow up class.
  • Had a blast in Michelle’s class. She is an incredible instructor and makes you feel comfortable with the equipment and process. You even get to make and take home a little sculpture. Will definitely be coming back!
  • Great class! Very no nonsense. If you want to know how to mig weld and operate a mig welder, this is the class for you. Michelle is a great instructor and adapts easily to your skill level. Highly recommend!
  • I had a blast. Michelle was very patient and calm while explaining things to me. She is a font of knowledge, and she makes you instantly feel at ease. I have always wanted to try an oxy/acetylene torch. You can feel the professionalism of Michelle’s years of teaching the welding arts. I totally geeked out at all the incredible tools. I may have to take her mig class next….
  • Amazing instructor. Knowledgeable and direct. Learned a lot.
  • Michelle is a fantastic teacher! With a class size of 2 people you really get so much personalized attention. She even catered the class to the type of metalwork we are ofter interacting within our industry. She is incredibly knowledgeable and gave us so much great information on not only the basics of welding but how to identify issues and problem-solve to get your machinery working correctly. I would highly recommend this class for any level of experience with welding and I hope to return in the future to try TIG and Stick welding!
  • Michelle Green is great in teaching The craft. You will be happy you took the class. To bad its only 2 hours.

Best Welding Classes in NYC

Welding is an essential skill in many industries, including construction, engineering, manufacturing, sculpting, and more. Metal workers are essential for crafting jewelry, creating homes, and building furniture as well. However, welding has a steep learning curve, especially for those without prior welding experience.

To learn to weld, it’s recommended that you take an in-person welding class. Welding classes taught by expert instructors can help you understand the basics of the techniques and show you how to use the tools and materials safely. Course Horse offers dozens of welding classes for those living in the NYC area.

Why You Should Learn Welding in NYC

There are many reasons why you should learn welding in NYC. Welding is a great skill if you’re interested in jobs or hobbies that handle metal. Here are other reasons why you should consider learning to weld:

  • A unique and interesting hobby: Welding is a unique hobby that not many people know how to do. By learning to weld, you can participate in something that makes you different.
  • Apply for welding jobs: If you want to begin a welding career, you’ll need to take a few welding courses.
  • Learn welding as an apprentice: Before starting as a welding apprentice, it’s a good idea to take a class to learn the basics.
  • Start a small business: You can start your own welding or art business with basic or intermediate welding skills.
  • Complete DIY projects: By taking a welding class, you’ll be ready to do basic DIY welding projects, which can help you save money.

Welding is also popular in art. For example, you can create metal sculptures and metal furniture. Course Horse offers several NYC welding classes that you can sign up for today.

In-Person Welding Classes & Schools in NYC

There are several in-person welding classes in NYC. For example, Michelle Greene Sculpture offers a two-hour Introduction to Oxy-Acetylene Welding course. The class has an average class size of only two people for those ages 18 and up. Since the classes are small, you’ll get 1-on-1 instruction and demonstrations from an expert instructor.

During the class, you’ll learn to light a torch, set a flame, and run a bead. You’ll also learn how to braze and create a small sculpture to take home. With the sculpture, you can display jewelry or hold candles. Although the class is open to beginners, those with welding experience are also welcome. Intermediate students can learn new skills or refresh skills they already know.

Michelle Greene Sculpture also offers a Mig Welding class for two people. The course aims to keep the course small so that the students can benefit from direct instruction. Because of this, students will get immediate feedback on techniques and improve quickly. Students will also get hands-on experience as they learn how to use a mig welder. You’ll learn to set the machine, tack, and run a bead in the class. Then, as you learn to use the materials, you’ll create a unique small sculpture you can take home.

During the class, you’ll be handling burning metal and flame, so you must be conscious about what you wear. For example, the class description requests that you wear closed-toe shoes, cotton socks, and a long-sleeved shirt. In addition, the class provides welding gear and gloves, so you don’t have to purchase any materials or equipment before class.

The Introduction to Tig Welding on Steel course is another class from Michelle Greene Sculpture. It meets once for three hours and is open to two people. Like the other classes from this school, the small class size ensures that you get 1-on-1 instruction for most of the class time. The course takes place in a studio with a wall of open windows and excellent ventilation. Some of the skills that you’ll learn include:

  • How to choose the right tungsten for the job
  • Set the gauge
  • Use the foot pedal
  • How to weld

You’ll also learn how to set up a welding shop if you want to start a welding career. The instructor will discuss different equipment’s pros and cons so you know your options. Although this class is open to beginners, it’s recommended that you take a prerequisite class beforehand. Feel free to reach out if you have questions about which prerequisites qualify.

Craftsman Ave in NYC offers a four-hour Make a Steel Planter Box (Welding/Metal Fabrication) class. The class is open to anyone over 18 and is great for beginners. Since it’s available to beginners, you won’t need to take a prerequisite. In the class, you’ll learn the fundamentals of welding as you build a metal planter. The course is open for one evening, but you’ll learn all the skills needed to create a small minimalist planter. You’ll practice your skills and create custom art to take home. You’ll learn to use the MIG welder, angle grinders, and other hand tools. In addition, all of the tools and supplies are provided in the class. Simply come ready to learn.

If you’d like to take the same class but with a date, you can take Date Night: Make a Steel Planter Box. This four-hour class from Craftsman Ave in NYC is open to beginners on a date night. You will join the class as a couple with a pizza and wine to share during the workshop. The class offers a hands-on introduction to metal fabrication.

Consider taking Craftsman Ave’s Weld a Steel Rose course to create small and precise art sculptures. During the workshop, you’ll create a delicate metal rose from steel. You’ll start by preparing the metal petals and using MIG welding to attach the rose’s petals to the stem. Next, you’ll be instructed on how to use an open-flame torch to shape the petals. Each student will be able to take home one rose.

Virtual Welding Classes & Schools

Welding can be dangerous to learn on your own at home without proper supervision. To weld, you’ll need to use an open flame, and it’s best to begin your learning experience in a welding studio with proper ventilation. Because of the risks associated with welding, it’s recommended that you learn how to weld by taking an in-person class instead of an online course. However, if you’re interested in taking an online metalworking class, you can find some online classes that teach similar skills.

Currently, there are no virtual welding classes available online. Instead, consider the Hammered Earring (Virtual Private) course. This class meets one time online and is a private class from an expert instructor. You will attend a live demonstration of how to make hammered earrings. During the live demonstration, you will learn how to forge, solder, and make findings for earrings and finishings. After the demonstration, there will also be an open forum for questions and answers.

The NYC Jewelry Lab offers a Jewelry Making Wax Addition Technique course with the instructor Carolina Iwanow. The class will teach how to design, fabricate and build incredible jewelry without having a jewelry studio. You will learn to shape, build, fold, weld, twist, and form wax into rings, pendants, bracelets, and earrings. The class will also cover basic knowledge about the casting process.

You can also take Virtual Polymer Clay Earrings and Accessories class. Although the class doesn’t provide the materials, you’ll find the full list of materials on Course Horse’s site. For example, some of the materials you will need are polymer clay, a cutting blade, tracing paper, an acrylic roller, jump rings, and more. At the end of the class, the instructor will show you how to oven-bake the clay as well.

Another in-person group class is the NYC In-Person: Design Your Own Soapmaking Event for up to 125 people. During this workshop, you’ll create natural, plant-based aromatherapy soaps and customize your own products. Participants will create three unique glycerin soap bars by choosing their fragrance, color, and botanicals/additives. The entire event lasts one hour and 30 minutes.
