All courses are held at Alley Pond Park, Queens, NY unless indicated.
Steve and Violet were immensely knowledgeable and I recommend this walk to anyone curious about connecting with the plants in their path. As an amateur forager, I left with several new plant allies to name and work with as food and medicine. Disclaimer: brace yourself for some seriously corny jokes :-)

Provider Description
Foraging expert Steve Brill has shared his foraging wisdom at schools, museums, parks departments, environmental organizations, and with scout troops since 1982. He’s written three books and an app, stars in a DVD and maintains a website.
His History with Foraging
As part of his exercise regime, he was bicycling past a local park in Queens, New York City, where he lived, when he saw some ethnic Greek women, dressed in traditional black garb, collecting something. He stopped and asked what they were doing but couldn't understand a word of what they were saying. It was all Greek to him. He came home with a bag of wild grape leaves, which he readily stuffed. They were delicious. When he returned to the same park in the fall, the trees were festooned with fox grapes, the wild forerunner of Concord grapes, and they're scrumptious too. He got books on the subject and began learning all the wild food he could find. He had so much fun foraging, he thought other people might enjoy it too, and that led to his foraging tours.
The purpose of his hands-on program is to learn about the environment and get back in touch with nature. By studying foraging and nature, we enjoy our renewable resources and reaffirm our commitment to preserving and rebuilding our ecological riches. All the tours and presentations feature a great diversity and abundance of common, renewable, seasonal edible and medicinal wild plants or mushrooms.
All tours are open to people of all ages, plus well-behaved dogs.

Excellent course!
Only issue was actually finding the in-person foraging class, which was meeting in a crowded public area without sufficiently specific location details and no instructor contact details on the Coursehorse website or emailed course registration confirmation. Luckily the instructor's name was mentioned on the Coursehorse website, and I was able to do and online search, find his contact info and reach him by phone to locate the class so my daughter and I could get there before they departed into the woods for the class. Coursehorse should provide better class meeting location details and instructor contact information on their website and emailed course registration confirmations.

This class was amazing– exactly the kind of expert and community treasure we should be featuring on this platform. Steve is awesome. I had an amazing time, it was exactly what I was looking for and showed me new dimensions of my neighborhood and connect with my neighbors.

Steve was hilarious, insightful and took great care on guiding us through the park and providing detailed identification of plants. Best money you'll ever spend on a course, and one that will help you find free food for the rest of your life!

The beginning of the event was great. Wildman Drill pointed out some leaves in the playground that was fascinating to learn about. Everyone was able to crowd around him and hear his informative talk. But as the event progressed, we got into narrow areas where everyone was not able to crowd around him. And though he is a very informative person, and I really enjoyed learning from him, I was unable to appreciate the second half of the event because I was unable to hear anything he said.
I think I would have enjoyed this event a lot more if instead of having 30+ people and 3 dogs, the group was smaller, like 10-12 people. And if he had a megaphone or some kind of loudspeaker, it would have made it easier to hear him. My wife and I went on a tour up by Fort Tyron Garden. The tour Guide had a megaphone, and we were able to hear every word she said. The tour was very enjoyable, and I recommended it to several friends and family members. Unfortunately, I will not be recommending this event.

Despite that day's rainy conditions, I really enjoyed this urban foraging adventure. Wildman Steve's wealth of knowledge & experience, casual teaching style, and humor kept me engaged the entire time. I was amazed to learn about just how many edible plants and mushrooms were growing all around us in this city park. My only regret was forgetting to bring a collection bag to take some samples home!

It was fun! We walked through prospect park looking for different plants/herbs to forage. The guide was eccentric and knowledgeable. I definitely forgot most of the things he taught us, but it was fun regardless.
