Description

From the lush walls of colorful yarns to the latest fabric design lines, The Yarn Company turns crafting into an art form. The new co-owners and siblings, Tavy and Assaf Ronen, who took over the legendary Upper West Side yarn store this Spring, have created a modern and clean gallery space brimming with creative energy. Small orange trees sit in the windows, flooding the shop with a warm glow, and exposed brick walls create an intimate atmosphere that invites you to touch your way through an array of artisanal products. Specializing in hand-painted indie yarns and fibers, upscale sewing, spinning, weaving, needlepoint and embroidery supplies, the store also features classes for everything from basic knitting and quilting to elaborate finishing and spinning your own yarn from scratch. The newest reincarnation of The Yarn Company will reignite your creative side.

Redesigned by Assaf, a lawyer who built many of the minimalist fixtures himself out of pipes, the store now includes bright airy work space for classes and shows. The result is a space where fiber artists can both show their designs and teach.

The Ronens’ vision is a store that takes its customers’ visions seriously and gives them the tools to realize them. Tavy, a professor of finance with a penchant for haute couture and a love for her sewing machine, says that her concept for the store grows in part out of her Soho, New York childhood: “We were raised in New York in the 70’s and 80’s, when it was Punk New York, Hip Hop New York and Indie Film New York. People with the ‘do it yourself’ ethos of these subcultures exploded into art and dance and fashion. We don’t really believe that art and craft and fashion and real life are separable. Our customers do not knit or sew or embroider or weave to recreate what they see elsewhere. They do it to release their vision.”

Well... the actual learning how to knit part of the class was good. However, there were some obstacles to getting to that part. We were told we had to purchase materials for the class at the shop.. but when we arrived they only had one color of yarn available and let's just say I could tell why it was the only one left. So I am not too excited about my finished project. Also, they were not expecting me. I signed up over a week before and somehow too many students were booked for the class. Also it was quite warm in the studio. For someone who is always cold, I broke a sweat knitting.

Barbara was the instructor! I got a great first class at the Yard School! Barbara has a great friendly, outgoing, encouraging approach to teach beginners like my fellow classmate and someone who is more advance, like myself. I was not bored at any moment, I was not waiting for her. She allowed time for me to try what I just learned and came back in to review my work. Thank you Barbara! you are an amazing lady.

Class was larger than teacher expected, so she had less time to give each individual student. Most displeasing - we were required to buy yarn and needles from the store. However, the weight of yarn needed for the project only bright yellow was available for purchase. Both me and friend had to purchase a different weight of yarn - to make the project work because we could not bare paying $30 for a terrible yellow color.

What a great place! Kind, patient instructors and so much yarn to chose from. I've been a knitting machine since I left (and by machine I mean I'm slowly chipping away at my first piece). Can't wait to go back and learn more!

Had a wonderful time, beautiful quant store with just as beautiful yarn through out the store. Instructor was friendly and patient with me, I was able to learn what I need and what I went there to learn and came home to practice. I can happily say I'm on my way to making a wonderful scarf! Will go back and recommend it to friends and family.

The instructor was very nice but didn't teach the basics well. Having never knitted before, I needed to know how to hold the needles, etc. She wasn't able to explain things effectively. I'd like to take another class but I'll look for a different location.

Teacher was disorganized and did not have time to provide an overview for each student. Was not a good use of time and left feeling like I did not learn anything new. YouTube videos are more helpful than this class.

This was a great class. There were only three people in attendance, so it was easy to get hands on help. Jasmine was a fantastic teacher and I look forward to learning more! Note: as the description mentions, you are required to buy your own yarn and needles from the store (no outside materials). The thick yarn runs approx. $25 and the needles are around $15. Hope that is helpful for someone! Thanks again!
