In this course, you will learn how to cut, assemble and finish wooden picture frames to your specifications using a sturdy and beautiful technique called corner spline joinery. Frames made without fasteners in this way become durable, long-lasting heirloom pieces. In addition, you will be able to cut your own mats and professionally mount artwork, photographs, or mementos in the frames.
These fine art frames are intended to be wall-mounted, and will include turnbuttons that allow the media to be changed or adjusted, thereby making these great gifts for people to add their own photos or art.
Students in this class will learn many techniques, including:
- Cutting rabbets with a dado blade
- Cutting miters
- Keyed miter joinery
- Sanding and finishing
- Mat cutting
Students can choose to either make one frame with custom mat, or two frames without mats. Frame sizes should be no more than 30 inches in either direction. Glass is not included, but can be easily found at local art supply and hardware stores.Prerequisites: table saw, chop saw, and band saw experience.
Classes that do not meet the minimum attendance number may be cancelled or rescheduled. If so, you will receive a full refund or credit regardless of the cancellation date.
