Class Description

Description

Join the NYC Photo Safari team for "Manhattan Photo Safari"! An intensive three-day weekend photography workshop to photograph what makes New York City the Big Apple!

This photography workshop is for photographers who are ready to get serious about understanding their camera settings, fine-tuning their composition skills, and improving their overall digital photography. Under the direction of photo pros you’ll photograph the most famous landmarks and icons of NYC.

Here's what can you expect on this three day weekend photo workshop: You'll start with a Nuts & Bolts session and move onto 5 daytime and 3 night time shooting sessions. You will photograph the Brooklyn Bridge during the day and at night, the Manhattan skyline at night from the Top of the Rock as well as from Brooklyn; you will also photograph the Flat Iron Building, the Empire State Building, Radio City Music Hall, Wall Street, the Municipal Building, Chinatown, Lower East Side, Grand Central Terminal, Rockefeller Center, the Chrysler Building, the New York Public Library, Bryant Park, Times Square at night, and the most famous locations of Central Park. You will photograph new and old buildings, taxi cabs and subways, and the people and places that represent the immigrant history of Manhattan (Chinatown and the Lower East Side). You will learn which lenses to choose depending on subject matter, how to use your flash, long exposure and much more. You can expect to be away from your hotel 12-13 hours each day and shooting 6-9 hours. You will walk 3 to 4 miles a day and shoot more than 250 pictures a day. It is a rigorous schedule with minimal down time, meant to make sure you leave NYC with amazing and memorable photos of the most spectacular icons in the city while learning how to do it on your own. You will be tired to the core, that’s why we are calling it the Manhattan Photo Boot Camp; but like all boot camps you will have plenty to show for your hard work. This is not for the faint of heart. This is a unique opportunity to not only photograph but experience NYC.

This photography workshop also includes an unlimited 1 week subway pass, ticket to the Top of the Rock, and tripod rental for 2 night safaris. Meals and accommodations are not included. For questions please send us an email at [email protected]

Required equipment:

  1. Digital Camera
    • Although we suggest you use a DSLR, Micro 4/3 or mirrorless, you may also participate in this Photo Boot Camp with any digital camera. If your camera does not have full manual overrides or a flash you will not be able to take full advantage of the the night time sessions.
  2. Flash
    • You may use your on camera (built in flash) or an external speedlight.
  3. Tripod
    • You will need a full size tripod for 2 of the three night sessions (1 night for Holiday Boot Camp) and a table top tripod for the Top of the Rock. If you would like to us to provide you with a rental tripod (full size or table top) at no additional cost you must notify us at the time of registration.
  4. Lenses
    • It is recommended that you have a range of lens choices from 24-200mm (full frame) or 18-175mm (DX sensor). If you only have a 35mm or 50mm prime (fixed focal length) lens you will unable to take full advantage of most of the shooting opportunities of these workshops. And ultra wide angle lense (16-35mm or 10-24mm) is also VERY helpful.
  5. Memory Cards
    • Although each photographer participant's experience will be different, you may be taking upwards of 700-2000 images on each day. Please bring more memory than you anticipate needing in one day. It's best to have and not need than to need and not have. We recommend that you use multiple cards during your workshop as memory cards can fail; it would be a shame to loose everything because of one bad card.
  6. Filters
    • There may be an opportunity to do broad daylight slow shutter speed photography on the 5 day session. This will require that you have a 10 or 15 stop filter. Information on buying filters is available on these podcasts: How to Buy Filters & Square or Circular Filters
  7. Laptop
    • Post production will be covered in the 5 Day Photography Workshop and you will need to bring a laptop loaded with Lightroom Classic and Photoshop and some images ready to go. This is only if you want to participate in the post production session.
  8. Appropriate attire
    • Please check the weather forecast and be ready for everything. There will be a lot of walking on pavement and uneven surfaces, please wear comfortable shoes; this is not the time to break in a new pair of shoes.

Note: Minimum of 2 enrollees for the class to run otherwise, class will be cancelled.

Refund Policy

  • Participant may cancel a class up to 3 business days prior to its commencement and receive a full refund less 5% cancellation fee or credit towards a future class.
  • If Participant cancels within 3-2 business days prior to the start of their class, Participant shall be offered a refund or credit, minus a 25% administrative fee of the price paid per participant.
  • If Participant fails to cancel or reschedule 2 business days or more prior to the commencement of scheduled class, or does not attend said class, Participant is considered a “no show” and is not entitled to any refund or credit towards future classes.
  • If Participant is "no show", participant may reschedule by paying a $50 extension fee if Participant contacts CourseHorse within 24 hours after the end of the scheduled photo tour.

We are not responsible for Participant “no show” due to acts of God, transit delays, medical emergency, street closures, etc. Exceptions may be made on a case-by-case basis at the schools sole discretion. Participants who decide to leave a class already in progress, for any reason, will not result in a full or partial refund. Joining a class late will also not result in a full or partial refund.

If a class is canceled by the school for any reason other than weather prior to the start of the session, Participant shall be entitled to a full refund or a full credit towards another class. Classes are “rain or shine” and every effort will be made to conduct a scheduled class. We reserve the right to make changes to any itinerary whenever, in our judgment, conditions warrant or if we deem it necessary for the convenience or safety of participants and instructors. If the school cancels, changes a location or itinerary of any class, We are not responsible for any cancellation fees or other costs incurred by participant.

The school may change the location or itinerary of a photo tour (and may move outdoor class indoors or move indoor class outdoors) due to any conditions outside the control of the school (including but not limited to weather conditions, transit strikes, protests, etc.). Every reasonable effort will be made to operate itineraries as planned, but alterations may still occur after final itineraries are sent. Location changes do not alter the refund and reschedule policies above, i.e. if a location change is announced within 48 hours of the start time of a safari and Participant wishes to reschedule, 25% rescheduling fee (as stated above) continues to apply.

All credits must be used within three (3) months from the date the original class was scheduled.

In any event where a customer wants to cancel their enrollment and is eligible for a full refund, a 5% processing fee will be deducted from the refund amount.
