Class Description

Description

What you'll learn in this still life class:

This is an experimental studio course intended for beginner to advanced artists.  In this class we will discuss light, color, atmosphere, form, the emotive qualities of hue, and painting techniques.  Exercises range from still life painting, to photo reference, to portrait painting, each with definitive parameters.  Weekly lectures and demonstrations will be provided to better understand the use of color as an academic and narrative tool.

Q&A

Q: Can I make up a class if I miss one?
A: No, there are no makeup classes. Because art is taught with demonstrations and demonstrations are time consuming, if one person misses the class each week, the instructor would spend the first part of each class repeating the demonstration from last week before moving on to the next lesson, which isn't fair to the students who attended. That said, most of our classes are taught atelier style. If there is a demonstration during the particular session, after the demonstration, the instructor goes to each student to work with them on a one-on-one basis. During this time, the instructor can work with you if you missed the previous week to talk and explain what to do.

Q: Are materials provided and included in the cost of the class?
A:  No. Materials include:

Paint (oil preferred)
Please bring first four colors to first day of class, other colors will be discussed as needed. It is notnecessary to purchase all colors at once, as we will be working with a variety of limited palettes.
  • Titanium White

  • Transparent Oxide Red
  • Ivory Black
  • Cadmium Red Light
  • Cadmium Yellow Light
  • Cadmium Green Light
  • Cerulean Blue

  • Cobalt Violet
  • Provence Violet
  • Rose Madder
Additional colors and personal preferences will be discussed. If you have a different palette, bring it first day. We’ll see if it works.

  • Any will work, wood preferred. Make sure it is large enough to mix on (and sealed if wood). I’ll discuss first day of class, loanerpalettes can be provided for short term use.

MAKE-UP POLICY
Unfortunately, we do not offer makeup classes. The instructor can tell them what they missed. Most of our classes are taught atelier style. If there is a demonstration during the particular session, after the demonstration the instructor goes to each student to work with them on a one-to-one basis. During this time the instructor can work with the student who missed the previous week, talk with them and explain what to do.

Mark Opirhory is an absolutely excellent, dedicated, skilled and caring teacher. I took the course as an independent study within another class because the course did not run, and I learned a ton, both about color relationships in different palettes and about painting in general.
