Carving in glass and stone involves both patience and foresight, requiring an ability to visualize three dimensional forms hidden within raw material. While there are various traditions of shaping hard siliceous materials, the coldshop offers a modern range of tools and processes utilizing diamond abrasion. This workshop will give students an introduction to methods of carving using the tools of the coldshop, with special attention given towards the Foredom flex shaft and its myriad of cutting and grinding attachments. Starting with strategies of approach and visualization, students will be given a fundamental understanding of how to create 3 dimensional objects in glass or stone through processes of removal.
While a variety of materials will be provided, students are encouraged to bring materials that they are inspired by and wish to work with in the coldshop (rocks, minerals, found objects, etc.). Time will be dedicated to facilitating individual students’ ideas.
