What you'll learn in this art history class:

Since the early 2000s, street art has surfaced onto the walls of cities across the globe and has prevailed as the dominant urban visual culture. In bustling cities like New York City we encounter street art everyday: on our subway ride to work, during weekend strolls in Chelsea or Soho, after a late night in Williamsburg, or as we explore the up-and-coming Bushwick art scene. Street art captures our attention but how much do you really know about it?

In this class, you will learn about the history and origin of street art, including its early initiators, prevalent genres, and main artistic influences. There also be an introduction to the creative mediums and techniques used by street artists, such as stencils and wheatpastes. You’ll become familiar with the leading street artists in the New York City scene, learn how to recognize their styles, and find out where to see the most exciting works on the streets.

Takeaways:
  • Learn about street art terminology
  • Differentiate between street art vs. graffiti vs. muralism
  • Identify NYC-based street artists through their signature styles
  • Recognize the various techniques and mediums used in street art
Prerequisites & Preparation:

If you’ve photographed a street art piece before, post the picture on Instagram and tag @fluentcity along with hashtag #streetartfc. If you haven’t, take one on your way to class.
