Online: Television Writing 2

Writing for television has the potential to be not only artistically satisfying, but lucrative as well—just ask Aaron Sorkin from "The Newsroom," Zakiyyah Alexander from "Grey's Anatomy,"or Joshua Allen from "Empire.". This class is your opportunity to build on what you learned in TV Writing 1 about the structure and language of television and apply it to your own writing, so you can work to join the ranks of these distinguished playwrights-turned-television writers.

This class might be for you if you:

• Have taken TV Writing 1 are looking to continue your learning!

In this class you will:

• Continue to discuss the elements of a television script, particularly focusing on structure, form, and language, and do exercises on these elements as needed.
• Bring in a basic pilot idea that you would like to explore within class (whether building on what you brought to TV Writing 1 or a different idea altogether), addressing character, story arc, structure, and what a pilot would look like and need to include.
• Create and/or refine your pilot and series arc, and embark on writing your first season.

By the end of this class you will have:

• A deeper understanding of the components of television writing.
• A strong revision of your pilot and further writing on your first season, and the tools to continue writing and developing your work.

About the online platform for this class: 

Zoom Meeting is easy to start, join, and use to collaborate online in a personable way via desktop or mobile without complicated set-ups. The Zoom Meeting Host (your ESPA instructor or administrator) sends out a meeting link and at the time of your class, you just click the link to launch the virtual classroom via your web browser. In the Zoom Meeting, each participant can share their webcam so that you're not only hearing your instructor and classmates but seeing them too, making it feel similar to being in one of the studios at ESPA. Other exciting collaborative Zoom features include Breakout Rooms in which students can meet in smaller groups, "Raise Your Hand" feature to better facilitate balanced conversation, Video Sharing, and File Transfer for your assignments. If you can't log in via a computer, there are also options to phone into the meeting so you can still participate in the class even if you find yourself without computer or internet access. And Zoom has an Apple and Android app, making it possible to take part in class from any device.
