Basic Music Theory 1 w/ Intro to Chart Writing

his 5-week workshop covers basic theory from scratch with an introduction to chart writing concepts. Reading and writing music, notating rhythm, time signatures, major scales, transposing melodies, transcribing simple rhythms, intro to chords in a key. Basic chart/lead-sheet writing techniques such as notating the overall rhythmic feel of a song, repeat signs, numbered endings, bar numbers, rehearsal letters.

Goals: Read and write melodic and rhythmic notation, understand keys, change the key of a melody. Begin to relate what you hear to music theory through simple ear training exercises. Create a basic chart of a song using the music theory and symbols learned in this class and more. You don’t need to have any prior music theory knowledge to take this class.
