Class Description

Description

What you'll learn in this literature class:

Join charismatic actor and teacher Leo Schaff as he breathes life into Shakespeare’s words, acting out portions of the play and offering illuminating insights into the Bard’s language, plot lines, historical context and eternal relevance, all with a generous sense of humor.

The Tempest - January 8

The magic hand of Prospero guides us through storm, loss, adventure and abandonment—to comedy, romance, and righteous reconciliation. Ariel, Caliban, Miranda, Trinculo ... the first play in The Folio; the last play Shakespeare wrote? Before “Our revels now are ended”, let the revelations begin …!

Venus and Adonis - February 26

Plays were Shakespeare’s thing, but poetry was his medium. The young Bard-of-Avon’s hugely popular narrative poem—all verse, all the way—the racy, comic tale of the mature Goddess of Love in hot pursuit of the youthful Adonis. What’s love got to do with it?

The Winter’s Tale - April 22

Yearning for Tragedy? Pining for Comedy? Can one give way to the other, all in the same play? Let credulity be strained, “awaken your faith,” and behold as darkness yields to the miraculous. Leontes, Polixenes, Hermione, Paulina, Autolycus. A King consumed, a Queen accused, families torn… ‘til Time heals, Winter tails, and Spring awakens. “Exit, pursued by a bear…”
