What you'll learn in this other kids camp class:

The seashore is always a special place for edible wild plants, and autumn is no exception. In addition to the beach habitat and adjacent fields and thickets, it's got cultivated areas, wetlands, and woodland trails.

The most spectacular find in the sand within sight of the ocean is sea rocket, is a pungent, succulent mustard found nowhere else, and it's as healthful as it is tasty.

There will also be edible seaweeds in the LI Sound. Irish moss, which is used as a commercial thickener in cosmetics and ice cream, also makes great puddings.

We're also almost certain to find rockweed, a seaweed that's an excellent ingredient in soup, and which you can also bake like kale chips. It's such an excellent source of iodine (which was first isolated and identified from this plant in 1803) that herbalists used it for thyroid problems for centuries. If the illness was caused by iodine deficiency, it would cure the problem. It contains other important minerals too.

We may also find sea lettuce, great sautéed with garlic, added to soups, or even candied!

Herbs and greens such as sheep sorrel, wood sorrel, chickweed, Asiatic dayflower, epazote, northern bayberry, field garlic, garlic mustard, yarrow, violets, and mullein will be growing along the edges of trails or in fields.

Roots are in season too. We'll be looking for common evening primrose, which has a sweet, peppery and radishy flavor. We could also find wild carrots. Sassafras root, the original source of root beer and a great culinary seasoning, will be around too.

Nuts are also in season, and we'll be collecting tasty black walnuts galore. We may also find white oak acorns, a staple of the Native Americans. Leeched of their tannin, they taste like chestnuts, although not as sweet.

Spectacular fruit will be here for the picking. We should get the last of the beach plums, delicious native fruit well-known to locals, and autumn olive berries, from an invasive East Asian shrub.

If there has been sufficient rain beforehand, we could find large quantities of choice gourmet fall mushrooms, such as chicken mushrooms, honey mushrooms, hen of the woods, various puffball species, dryad's saddle, wine-cap stropharias, and various inky cap species.

School Notes:
If you can't attend the class you signed up for, please call or email "Wildman" Steve Brill a day before the start of the class. No-call/no-show creates an inconvenience to all participants since we can’t tell if absentees are having transportation issues, and this delays the start of the tour/class.

Kindly note that price posted is our suggested donation only.
