Class Description

Description

Ready to pick up a needle and thread for the very first time? Or maybe you finally want to unbox that sewing machine and put it to use? In Sewing 101, we go all the way back to the basics, guiding you step by step through every essential skill to make learning to sew an enjoyable and inspiring journey.

Sewing 101 is ideal for complete beginners as well as those who have sewn before and want a refresher. By the end of this course, you will know how to confidently operate a sewing machine and complete a skirt or drawstring pants using a commercial pattern.

During this course you will learn:

  • All of the key sewing terminology and equipment
  • How to read a commercial pattern
  • How to select the right fabric for a garment, whether a skirt or drawstring pants
  • How to identify fabric grain lines
  • Different types of stitches and seam finishes you can accomplish on a sewing machine

PROJECTS: Denim tote bag and a pencil skirt, A-line skirt, or PJ pants from a commercial pattern

COST: $310

FABRIC AND SUPPLIES: Fabric for the tote bag is provided, and the pattern for the skirt or pants is included as well. Students will need 3-4 yards of non-stretch fabric. Wool, crepe, or cotton blends work well. Fabric is available for purchase at $16 per yard.

COURSE DURATION: 7 hours of sewing with either a 30-minute break or a 1-hour lunch break depending on the time of day.

2-PART OPTION: This class can also be split into two sessions of 3.5 hours each, rather than one full day. The same material is covered, just spread across two shorter classes. This option is listed in the drop-down menu.

PREREQUISITE: None!

What a fun class and what a terrific teacher. I really thought Jen gave terrific ways to remember basics (how to make sure your bobbin is in right). Love this place and will be taking classes again and again as I already have.

Fabulous class and fabulous teacher! Apparently classes on week days are smaller, so highly recommend! I love the pants I made and I feel like I can make clothes from a pattern now!

Course met expectations. Learned how to use a sewing machine, use a pattern, cut, sew and make a pair of pants. Would have appreciated a more hands on approach and patience from instructors when prepping pieces for sewing.

Class was small (there was about 7 of us). First couple of hours was learning to sew for tote bag , then break for 1 hour and the remaining hours was learning to sew the bottoms that you have chosen. I was not able to finish my project at the end but they gave an option to return another day to finish it up. Definitely learned a lot. Instructor was clear and patient with us.
