What you'll learn in this dye class:

This two day intensive introduces students to the world of beautiful, accessible, and sustainable botanical dyes. Students learn the basics of selecting and preparing fibers, extracting color from a variety of plant materials, and fixing natural dyes to fabric. We’ll discuss the history of natural dye use, and explore some contemporary applications of pattern.

Students will leave with the substantial beginnings of a swatch library documenting a range of fibers, dyes, mordants, and modifiers. Bring along any materials you'd like to experiment with!

Our classes are designed to focus on a learned skill rather than a final product. At TAC, our mission is to provide skills and knowledge for a lifetime! All materials for sample making and learning the technique are included. Any additional materials will need to be supplied by the student based on their vision.

Weekend Intensive students have access to Open Studio time for free for up to a week after the class, to put their new knowledge to practice.

Question from Alex D.
Hi, I saw in one of the reviews that a majority of the 2nd day is shibori folding techniques. I was wondering if that was still the case for this particular class because, like that reviewer, I am more interested in the dyeing/extracting process than folding. Thank you! :)
Answer from Brenda L. CourseHorse StaffCourseHorse Staff
Hi Alex! All of the weekend intensive dye classes go over Indigo and some Shibori techniques as part of the curriculum. The majority of the content of the class is dyeing, learning how to prep fabrics and making samples of different dye vats. The weekend intensive and 4-week dye classes also come with Open Studio which can be used to pursue the techniques you are more interested in. Hope this helps!

The instructor was wonderful - very passionate and knowledgeable about dyes, encouraging and accommodating! I would absolutely learn from her again. The class size was good, and the Textile Center was easy to find. The reason I gave fewer stars is that I don't think it was worth the expensive price for two days. We spent most of the second day doing Shibori folding, which is very interesting, but I wish we had focused more time on extracting natural pigments and dyeing samples for reference so we could learn more about making dyes on our own. This especially because it's pretty easy to find Shibori workshops, but Natural Dyeing is a lot more rare, so I was disappointed that the majority of the course wasn't spent on that exclusively. Pots and supplies weren't prepared beforehand, so a lot of the time it was a scramble to get everything we needed, and they had someone cleaning out old projects from the area and people walked through the space a lot during classtime, which was really distracting in such a small space. Overall the class gave interesting information, but I think it is overpriced. I think it would work better as a one-day dyeing intensive for half of the cost. I feel bad saying it because the instructor was so awesome, but I do regret spending so much on what ended up being a very casual setup.

The class was awesome! The instructor, Natalie was very nice to answer all the questions and instructions were very clear. It was sad though that the garden was no longer available because it would have been awesome to be able to go out and pick flowers to dye them. But the class is still very recommended!

I loved the set up of the class, the information given and the various projects we worked on. Too bad it already ended.
