What you'll learn in this photography class:

Whether you are starting out with photography or you are a seasoned photographer who always wanted to capture moments on the street, this class will provide a stimulating environment and open up a sphere of possibilities.

The advent of handheld cameras in the mid-1900s made Street Photography a popular and significant part of visual art and documentation. Today, a new surge in city-life and the launch of smartphones and photography apps have created a renaissance for Street Photography, making it more relevant and exciting as a tool for visual art and social commentary.

This class will focus on various aspects of Street Photography, including the technical (camera settings and editing tools), the aesthetic (composition and review of important photographers) and the practical (how to approach subjects on the street).

In the first session, we will review and discuss the topics listed above using photographers from mid-century to present day as a jumping point. For the next two sessions, students will bring a set of their photographs (as digital images or prints) that we will view and discuss in the context of the first session, focusing on the positives. A few additional viewing materials and discussions points will be chosen based on the student work.

The weekend before the second session, we will plan an optional photo-walk through an interesting neighborhood. Students are welcome to join in and/or shoot on their own.

The students can use any camera for this class. An SLR, a point-and-shoot and iPhone 5/5S (or the Android equivalents) are all good choices. We will discuss the pros and cons of the various camera classes and touch upon everything from mobile editing to Photoshop.

  2. We will provide aprons, but we recommend wearing something you wouldn't mind getting paint on- just in case! We use acrylic paint and it does stain clothes.
  3. All supplies are included, you don't need to bring anything unless you want to. We provide canvases, paint, brushes, easels, and aprons. Additional canvases can be purchased for a small fee.
