Returning students are also welcome to create individual projects with the instructor as they continue to develop their work during the class. We will explore basic color theory through observational still life exercises and abstract mark-making, starting small and working up to a larger painting format. Students will need to purchase the following materials:

  • 9" x 12" pad of watercolor paper.
  • 4 canvas boards or stretched canvasses ranging from 9" x 12" to 24" x 24".
  • 9" x 12" Paper palette.

I've been drawing forever, but have always wanted to try my hand at painting – I just don't know anything about techniques and wanted a space to explore and learn the basics. This class is just what I was looking for! It has a relaxed, not-too-structured vibe because the class is quite small (I've taken it twice now and have been one of 3 students both times). If you're looking for something super rigorous this may not be it, but if you're looking to work on your skills in a low-pressure environment with a teacher who will personalize assignments to you, you won't be disappointed :) Zach is a wonderful artist and encouraging teacher with an encyclopedic knowledge of both art history and the more contemporary scene.

Clarity, our instructor, was great. Knowlegeable. Encouraging. Thoughtful. I took this class to reaquaint myself with painting after not painting for over 30 years. Clarity gave me the instruction & encouragement that I needed to reawaken the paibter in me. Corny, I know. So what. Great class. Great space in Gowanus. My fellow students were sharing & caring. Goddamn I loved that class. Too bad it had ro end.

First off, this is a review for the "5 Session Intro to Painting" class with instructor Clarity Haynes. I thoroughly enjoyed this class! I learned a lot about acrylic painting techniques and enjoyed myself. Clarity Haynes, the instructor, was well prepared and organized and a wonderful guide to this new material. It helped that I had 3 great classmates working along with me -- it was a warm, friendly, and productive atmosphere and I'm so glad I had the opportunity to do it.
