What you'll learn in this drawing class:

Words are good descriptors and CAD programs represent a revolutionary drafting tool, but drawing is the creative link between the imagination and the realization of an idea. Today, technical drawing takes on a different purpose. This different purpose is in connection with spatial visualization and the ability to transfer that visualization to paper or computer, directly and fluently.

Through structured in-class hand drafting exercises, students explore critical technical drawing topics such as orthographic projection, isometric drawing, hidden views, sectional views, line types, line weights, and scale. To some degree, CAD has made hand drawing obsolete but only those with a profound understanding of geometry and spatial skills can make the best use of CAD systems.

Students are required to bring the following supplies:
  • 11”x17” unlined drawing paper
  • drawing pencils (HB, H or F weight)
  • 12" roll of tracing paper
  • eraser
  • 12" architect's scale ruler
  • 8” 30 degree / 60 degree triangle
  • 6” 45 degree triangle
  • 6” protractor
  • drafting tape or dots
  • and pencil sharpener (not electric).

These items can be purchased at the NYSID art supply store. Drawing boards with parallel straight edges will be provided.

Question from Katie T.
I'm interested in the technical drawing by hand before starting with CAD programs, and I am specifically interested in its application in the field of film and television. I realize this course is not specifically geared toward film and television and I assume most concepts are generally applicable, but I'm wondering if the instructor has any knowledge in this field that might be incorporated in the classes? Just curious... :)
Answer from Jeffrey P. Verified Student
Hi Katie, I'm personally unsure whether the instructor has any relating knowledge with TV/Film. Though he does have an extensive background. He is very personable and down to earth. I'd reach out to him if you're able to. Sorry I couldn't be more of a help.
Answer from Brenda L. CourseHorse StaffCourseHorse Staff
Hello, Katie! The course instructs the student to draw in a manner that explains their designs clearly. It provides a general knowledge of various methods of representation in order to select the best for each purpose. I believe this general graphics course will be helpful to many engaged in different types of design work. Hope this answers your question!
