Class Description

Description

Learn the fundamentals of SQL (Structured Query Language) and relational databases, so you can start writing SQL queries to extract and understand the information stored in databases.

This SQL starter course will provide you with strong foundational skills to explore the tables, columns, and rows stored in a database and write/code SQL queries to extract and start analyzing that data. Using practical, hands-on exercises, our expert instructor will guide you through understanding the basics of database architecture and will develop your skills in writing real SQL code.

You’ll learn how to write SELECT statements to choose the specific columns you want from tables, start filtering the results using WHERE, AND/OR, IN, and NOT. You’ll learn how to use wildcard filters as well as mathematical comparisons like equals, greater than, less than, etc. to retrieve only the data you want. Finally, you’ll combine data from multiple tables with inner JOINs.

By the end of this introductory hands-on course, you’ll be able to write basic SQL queries for Microsoft SQL Server. You’ll learn how to use the free SQL Server Management Studio app to explore the database and execute your SQL queries. The concepts you’ll learn on SQL Server can be applied to other flavors of SQL (such as Microsoft Access, PostgreSQL, MySQL, etc.) with minor syntax differences.

The class size was small, The instructor was knowledgeable and thorough, and very kind. However we didn't get a chance to do any labs/practice on our own - I believe that the best way of learning is practicing with the instructor, then independently, and then going over the labs together.

Thought it was really helpful - though it helped that I had a little experience using SQL already. I wish that they would use more medical/clinical examples as almost the entire class worked in hospital settings and the setup of these types of databases aren't as straightforward as something like product development.

The instructor was very knowledgeable and had a good course philosophy - hand-holding sometimes, letting us do things ourselves most of the time. I rated four instead of five stars because I was the only person that seemed to start from a true beginner's perspective in this course - everybody else seemed to have some knowledge about joins, aggregates, and other concepts. That's totally fine - I learned a lot from their conversation with the instructor. I will have to practice a bunch to learn some of the more complicated concepts.

Pace was ideal, not too fast that beginner couldn't keep up, but not too slow that it got boring.

Great class! This was a good overview of SQL. I am looking forward to practicing and attending Session 2. The only think i would improve is to have more independent work. I am a very hands on learner and I believe it would have been a good experience to try to create a lot of solutions on my own.

Coming in with a few years of database experience, I find this class to be a very good refresher course. The instructor, Peter, is a database elite; and he was great conducting the class -- the pace was just right, the topics were covered, and he encouraged us to think and engage in discussions. Unfortunately, he doesn't teach at night (I plan to attend the night session of SQL Level 2). The location was easily accessible from where I live (Jersey City). The classroom was clean, but a little too tiny. Good thing the class was small -- we were only five in the session, so room size didn't really matter at the time. The PC's were all working and ready, and we experienced no technical disruptions at all. We had a short morning break, a one hour lunch, and an afternoon break. Our group decided to shorten our lunch break so we could leave a little early. Keurig coffee machine is available at the lobby, and there's also a mini-fridge with water bottles and cans of soda for everyone. My only nitpick was the outside noise: the location was at the intersection of Madison and 34th, I could hear the constructions and ambulances. But the same can be said to other training schools I went to, so I am used to it. YMMV. Overall, I would recommend this class to anyone who wants to get his/her feet wet on SQL database. If you don't get it the first time, there's always a free retake (valid for a year I believe).

SQL level 1 was a great class to introduce SQL and to practice it. The instructor, Peter, was very informative and made sure we understood the concepts before moving on. He did a great job of testing our knowledge throughout the class.

The teacher was incredibly knowledgeable and not afraid to challenge you to come up with answers yourself. I wish there was more emphasis on practicing the code and testing varied uses after seeing the initial example.

Question from Chelsea C.
Can this class be taken on a Mac? And do we need any specific software?
Answer from Michael G. Verified Student
This class is given on a PC not a Mac. You don't need to bring your computer as they are provided for you. You also don't need to bring any software as it is provided for you.
Answer from Jenn C. CourseHorse Staff
Hi Chelsea! Unfortunately, Microsoft SQL server 2014 cannot be installed on the mac. The flavor of SQL for the Mac is Postgres which the school does not support in the class. However, they provide PCs in the classroom for your convenience. If you'd be interested in private tutoring on Postgres for the Mac please let us know through [email protected] and we'll be happy to connect you with them!
