Whether you are already an established fiction or documentary writer, filmmaker, or artist or just want to start making stories in virtual reality, this class is for you. VR storytellers can draw inspiration from many disciplines: film, game, animation, installation art, dance, immersive theater, and architecture, to name a few. That is what makes storytelling in VR so exciting — because there are no hard and fast rules (except one, and you will learn what that is).
In this class, we focus on the art of the story. No technical experience or experience with game engines is required. Come ready to think outside the box and out of your artistic comfort zone. By the end, you will understand the kinds of considerations that go into creating a story in VR and be inspired to make your own. The class format is a dynamic combination of lectures, illustrated with lots of examples from existing VR works, group exercises, and an open-style of teaching with lots of room for question and answers.
This course is taught by Illya Szilak, a writer, director, and interactive storyteller. Her first VR experience Queerskins: a love story, which combined 360 video, spatial audio, 3D volumetric live action video, photogrammetry, and CGI animation premiered at The Tribeca Film Festival in 2018.
First class: we'll start with the basics and then delve into how to think about setting and character and point of view. You'll be given a short, creative "homework" assignment to complete for the next class (you’ll spend an hour spatially mapping and developing an interactive scenario for a short scene, provided to you by Ilya). In the last class, we’ll devote one hour each to interactivity, aesthetics and empathy/ethics.
