Upcycling: Machine Applique Techniques

Add a bit of whimsy to your wardrobe with this introduction to Machine Applique workshop! During this 3 hour workshop, you will learn how to recreate an image in fabric and sew it to a garment.

What is a fabric appliqué? Appliqué is a technique of cutting and sewing pieces of fabric in different shapes and sizes to create an image on a piece of clothing.

We will cover things like:

• Making a stencil from your image
• Using fusible adhesive
• Edge stitching, satin stitching, pivoting

Prerequisite:

This class is beginner friendly but equires recent sewing machine experience — this is not a learn-to-sew class. Students who have taken [Sewing 101] or a private lessons with me tend to be the most prepared, as my teaching style builds the strong foundation for all other classes. That said, if you feel confident, you know yourself best! This note is simply here to make sure you're set up to enjoy every minute — not spend it catching up or unlearning old habits.

  Note: This does not include materials. Materials can be purchased separately or brought from home (see below).

What do you need to bring?

• An image [on paper] to use for your appliqué- could be simple shapes, flowers, letters for spelling words, pop culture characters, etc. Can be hand drawn or a found image.
• Item of clothing on which you will machine sew your applique. T-shirt or sweatshirt is ideal. A tote bag could work, too.
• Scraps of fabric to use for the applique. Knit fabrics are ideal (t-shirts, sweatshirts, etc.), but any scraps can be used. You can also bring old clothing to be cut

Note: If the materials brought by the student are not appropriate for the project or they forget them, students can purchase provided materials at the time of class for full price.
