Class Description

Description

Learn to sew PANTS! Join us to amp up your sewing skills in this confident beginner workshop!

In this two-evening workshop, you'll gain an understanding of sewing from a purchased pattern and learn to work with stretchy knit fabrics. You'll make a cozy pair of pants, custom made to fit your body, and will leave with the skills and confidence to tackle more stretchy garment sewing on your own.

You'll learn how to:

  • Measure the body accurately to create a perfect fit
  • Work from a commercial pattern, including size selection, deciphering instructions, cutting from paper pattern pieces, and more
  • Understand garment sewing basics such as proper fabric prep, pinning, cutting, and troubleshooting
  • Sew with knit fabric
  • Sew an elastic waist with drawstring, pockets, and ankle cuffs
  • Become familiar with sewing jargon commonly found in commercial patterns

Please note: We will not be covering how to include a drawstring or buttonholes in this workshop.

Required Materials:

Fabric and other supplies will be available for purchase in our retail shop at a 10% discount to students. You will receive a materials list and discount code within 24 hours of registering! All tools needed to complete this class will be provided and sewing machines will be available courtesy of BERNINA of America.

  • Hudson Pants Pattern -- Please note: This pattern comes in a wide range of sizes (womens size 00-18 & 14-30, mens 28-42, and kids 2T-10), however only womens size 00-18 is available as a pre-printed pattern, available to purchase at Brooklyn Craft Company the day of class. If you would like to sew womens size 14-30, mens 28-42, or kids 2T-10, you will need to purchase a PDF copy of the pattern, and have it printed before class. You can either have it printed in a large format at a copy shop (We recommend Brooklyn Motif or PDF Plotting!) or you can print with our home printer and assemble with tape.  Purchase a PDF copy here!
  • 1.5 - 3 yards (depending on size and fabric width. See size charts in photos above!) Medium weight knit fabric such as ponte, and sweatshirt knit, or interlock with a suggested stretch of 25% or more.
  • 2 yards of 2-inch wide elastic
  • 1 spool of all-purpose sewing thread

Skill requirements: This is a beginner garment sewing workshop; you do not need to have any experience sewing clothing, but you must have basic machine-sewing skills. Our Sewing 101 class (or equivalent) is a prerequisite for this class. (You can register for one of our upcoming Sewing 101 workshops here.) If you're unsure whether you have enough sewing experience for this class, please send a brief email summarizing your sewing experience to [email protected]

Cost: includes pants pattern, 6+ hours of instruction, and use of our BERNINA sewing machines. Does NOT include fabric or notions-- All required materials will be available for purchase during class at a 10% discount.

Refund Policy

We do not issue refunds on workshop registrations.

  • If you register for a workshop and later become unable to attend, we will gladly offer a credit if you notify us at least 5 business days before the workshop.
  • Workshop credits are not redeemable for cash and cannot be applied to merchandise purchases
  • We are unable to offer credits of any kind, or honor reschedule requests, with less than 5 business days advance notice.
  • Credits cannot be given for any registrations for workshops hosted by visiting/ out of town instructors. Due to the nature of these one-time-only workshops, all events hosted by special guests are subject to this policy. Thank you for understanding!
  • In the event a class is cancelled or rescheduled due to inclement weather, or other Act of God, you will receive a credit to take another class at a later date (in-person or virtual).

Our workshops require a great deal of pre-planning, including ordering supplies and tools, booking staff, and making commitments to pay our instructors -- all based on the number of students who register. When students ask to cancel or reschedule at the last minute, we lose money. As a small business, we are unable to absorb these costs and still keep our class prices low.

In fairness to all of our customers, we are unable to make exceptions to our policy, including for reasons of illness or travel. If you are unable to attend a workshop at the last minute, we suggest giving your spot to a friend!

Refund Processing Fees:

  • The following only applies in the event a provider’s cancellation/refund policy allows for cancellations and a full refund, please see above or contact CourseHorse to determine eligibility.
  • In the event a class is still going to occur and a full refund is requested, and you are eligible for a full refund in accordance with the provider’s policy, a 5% processing fee will be deducted from your refund amount.
