Sewing 102: Pattern Sewing

Ready to take your sewing skills to the next level?
At this point, you’ve mastered machine sewing basics. You can sew a pillow, or hem pants… Perhaps you’ve even taken Sewing 101 here at Brooklyn Craft Company and have sewn a rockin’ skirt. 

If you’re ready to build your skills so you can tackle more advanced projects (like sewing garments from a purchased pattern, or our leather sewing classes), this is the workshop for you.

In this three-session sewing intensive, you’ll gain an understanding of sewing from a purchased pattern, and you’ll sew a super-cute dress, custom made to fit your body. 

You’ll leave this class with the skills and confidence to tackle more garment sewing on your own. 

In this class, you’ll learn how to:

• Measure the body accurately to create a perfect fit
• Work from a commercial pattern, including size selection, deciphering instructions, cutting from tissue paper pattern pieces, and more
• Understand garment sewing basics such as proper fabric prep, pinning, cutting, ironing and trouble shooting
• Cut fabric and assemble a garment the right way
• Sew darts, sew a hem, create a faced neckline, insert a zipper, and more

We’ll be working from New Look 6262 in this class.

Are materials provided and included in cost of the class? No.
Students must bring their choice of fabric to sew their dress. 

Fabric & Supply Requirements each student must bring:

• 3 yards of light to medium weight woven fashion fabric. 
  Your fabric must be a woven, which means no stretchy/knit fabrics.  If you are not sure what type of fabric to look for, the clerk at your fabric store of choice should be able to guide you towards fabrics that meet the required fabric.
• 1 spool of matching all-purpose thread
• 22″ invisible zipper to match your fabric

The dress pattern will be provided in class and is yours to keep.
