What you'll learn in this knitting machine class:

In this 12-hour class, students will learn the basics of machine knitting on their own individual Brother 864 standard gauge knitting machine.

Students will learn the cast on and cast off processes, how to get a finished edge, how to increase and decrease, and garment finishing. Students will walk away with a finished project. Examples of projects include: socks, tank tops, a hat, and scarfs.

Please Note:
  • All materials for sample making and learning the technique are included. Any additional materials will need to be supplied by the student based on their vision.
  • Weekend Intensive students have access to Open Studio time for free for up to a week after the class, to put their new knowledge to practice.
Our classes are designed to focus on a learned skill rather than a final product. At TAC, our mission is to provide skills and knowledge for a lifetime!

Question from Hope
Hello! May I take this course if I own a (new) Silver Reed LK-150 rather than the Brother that is mentioned? Forgive me if I'm not clear on whether we supply our own machine or use the ones at the studio. Thank you!
Answer from Brenda L. CourseHorse StaffCourseHorse Staff
For Machine Knitting 101, the student is also welcome to bring in their own machine (Silver Reed LK-150). Thank you!

Question from Lewis B.
I live in New Jersey. How do l get to class from Port Authority 40th street Manhattan?
Answer from Brenda L. CourseHorse StaffCourseHorse Staff
Hi there! Textile Arts Center's Machine Knitting classes are in our Brooklyn Location. From Port Authority you can take the AC to Jay Street then transfer to the R or walk to the R and take it straight to Union Street. Hope this helps!

Laura is a gifted teacher! We had a wonderful group of 6 students, and she did a great job recognizing the different levels of the students' needs. She is extremely patient and her instructions were clear. She has a great ability to troubleshoot. The facility is beautiful and I learned so much! Happy to have found you! Suzanne

Excellent learning experience. The instructor was very knowledgeable and helpful. Learned how to cast on and cast off. Learned about the knitting machine function and was able to apply the principles during practice. Great course! I would recommend this course to all.

Joey spent all his time on his favorite students and was visibly agitated when he had to help those who were having issues with their machines.

Joey was a great instructor. He has a great way of giving us puzzles to build on the principles we've learned to do more complex things. He's attentive, supportive and upbeat. Some of the machines are better than others, but none seemed too bad. The materials are free. Be sure to look for nice thread/yarn that is a proper thickness and isn't too old. Or better yet, bring your own fibers. What's super nice, is that you get some studio time access, outside of class, for a period of time after the class. This is helpful to get more familiar with the machines and process. After the free access ends, you can buy more time. I'm looking forward to advanced machine knitting. I can already sense that I wish that session was a 2-day intensive rather than 1.

Loved this class and learned a lot. As said before it’s more about learning about the machine and different techniques rather than coming home with a finished project. Some of the machines are a bit finicky but I saw that as a way of learning how to solve issues you might run in to.
