Embroidery 101 is a relaxed workshop for beginners curious about trying something new or those ready to revisit a craft you haven’t touched since summer camp. You’ll learn the foundational techniques of hand embroidery while creating a stitch sampler and customize your own personal item. No experience needed — just bring your curiosity (and something you’d love to stitch on).
Over the course of this 2 hour session, you’ll learn a handful of beginner stitches, explore how to transfer your own design, and get plenty of time to practice and play. We’ll end with time to start embroidering a personal item using your new skills— like a tote, shirt, or hat
We will cover things like:
- 3 beginner hand embroidery techniques
- How to transfer a design to fabric
- Floss, needle, and fabric basics
- How to finish and display
- Tips for embroidering on garments or accessories
Prerequisite: No embroidery experience required! newbies or those in need of a refresh are welcome!
What is Included:
- 2 hours of workshop
- Live demo practice, & work time
- Use of tools: embroidery hoops, needles, scissors
- Practice materials: fabric, floss, transfer paper
- Work time on your actual existing garments with individual guidance from me!
- Student discount on take-home beginner embroidery kits (optional purchase)
What do you need to bring?
Bring one personal item you'd like to embroider — something light- to medium-weight, non-stretch, and made of a natural fiber (like cotton or linen). Think: tote bag, collared shirt or a baseball cap. If you're unsure, feel free to bring a couple of options!
Note: It will be up the discretion of the teacher if the materials brought by the student are not appropriate for the project.
What should I NOT bring:
- Synthetic, thick, or medium to heavy weight fabric
- Items in need of repair or alteration. This is an embroidery design based class.
- Soiled or dirty items. All items must be clean and freshly laundered
- A project that requires multiple steps before this technique is applied. This is not a guidance project class, we are focusing only on this specific technique. If you want to make process on a project there two offers would be great option: [Open Studio] and [BYOP]
Note: If the materials brought by the student are not appropriate for the project or they forget them, students maybe able to purchase provided materials at the time of class.
