Class Description

Description

Join the JCC Ceramics Studio for our Raku field trip. Always wanted to try Raku firing but don't know how to get there? We've got you!

On a full Saturday in Bloomfield, NJ, you'll journey to the studio of renowned Raku potter, Pete Syak. Here, under his expert guidance, you'll glaze and fire your creations, ready to take home the same day. Each participant can fire 3-5 pieces (depending on size), with personalized assistance available throughout the workshop. Students should bring bisque fired pottery. Primarily white clay but others are fine as well.

Please note that participants should have prior experience in wheel throwing or hand building, with the ability to work efficiently with minimal instruction.  Saturday (9am-5pm, excluding transportation time) in Bloomfield, NJ. We kindly request a few volunteers to lead carpools to the destination.

A NOTE ABOUT RAKUWARE: Raku is a low-temperature firing process, and for that reason, raku pottery is softer and can chip more easily than many other forms of pottery. Raku pottery is not food safe, nor will it hold water. Raku pottery should be considered more decorative and not be used as “normal” daily ceramicware.

School Notes:
Marlene Meyerson JCC Manhattan, while we are a Jewish community center, nothing about our art classes are religious and all are welcome in our building at all times.
