The Cathedral Basilica of the Sacred Heart in Newark, New Jersey, presents a breathtaking visual spectacle, both inside and out. This magnificent structure offers an excellent subject for developing and refining your composition skills as applied to architectural photography. From the exterior, you can capture the impressive silhouettes of this sacred building set against the sky, experimenting with compositions with and without clouds. Close-up perspectives and eye-level angles create striking gothic impressions that produce portfolio-quality results. Your knowledgeable DPA instructor will demonstrate techniques for creating powerful and compelling scenes from the interior as well, whether capturing a profile view of a person silhouetted against the warm golden light streaming through a stained glass window, or showcasing the golden hues of wooden pews and other intricate architectural design flourishes.
Your instructor will demonstrate multiple composition strategies, including the use of leading lines to direct the viewer's eye through the frame; framing techniques that use details in the foreground to anchor attention and guide the viewer on an engaging visual journey throughout the entire composition.
Each Composition in the Field class begins with an instructional presentation led by one of our accomplished and experienced photography instructors. Following this educational introduction, you and your fellow classmates take a guided exploration through one of numerous photogenic locations served by Digital Photo Academy across more than 20 cities throughout North America. Photography opportunities range from compelling street photography and magnificent interior spaces to farmers' markets, zoological parks, stunning natural landscapes, and many other inspiring subjects. The course incorporates diverse photographs created by both student participants and professional instructors across numerous different venues and cities spanning the United States and Canada.
You will find the three-hour session enjoyable and educational; you will learn strategic shooting approaches, create more interesting and visually compelling photographs, and develop a solid foundation of skills to improve your photographic work in future situations. These techniques apply broadly, whether you're traveling to new destinations, photographing birthday celebrations, or capturing moments everywhere in between.
