Join our photography class at Newport Waterfront in Jersey City, one of the most scenic and photographically rewarding stops in our extensive rotation of New Jersey venues.
The Newport Waterfront offers a beautiful walking path along the Hudson River, with open water views, contemporary architecture, public art installations, and sweeping perspectives of the Manhattan skyline. It is an ideal outdoor setting for learning how to photograph urban waterfront environments using available natural light and compositional intention.
The class begins at the waterfront itself, where wide river views provide strong opportunities for establishing shots. Your Digital Photo Academy instructor will guide you in framing cityscapes using horizon placement, clean edges, and balanced compositions, and show you how to use piers, railings, and walkways as leading lines that naturally draw the viewer's eye into the image.
As the group moves along the route, the class will stop at the Water's Soul sculpture, a large-scale public artwork rising dramatically from the waterfront. This stop is ideal for practicing how to photograph a prominent subject within a busy, layered environment. Your instructor will address scale, symmetry, and subject placement, demonstrating how minor shifts in your position can transform the final image.
Continuing farther, longer stretches of piers and walkways open up toward the Hoboken shoreline, offering opportunities to work on layering: combining foreground structures, midground activity, and distant skyline views into a single, well-organized photograph. Reflections on the water and repeating pier elements provide natural opportunities to study pattern, rhythm, and visual depth.
If time and group interest allow, the walk may extend toward Pier A and the Hoboken Train Terminal, reaching areas near the Stevens Institute. This portion introduces different architectural styles and longer sightlines, allowing you to compare focal lengths, experiment with camera height, and practice framing for emphasis on structure, scale, and distance.
The route is flexible, and your instructor will adjust the pace and stops based on the group's interests and energy, ensuring time is spent on the subjects and techniques that matter most to each participant.
Know Before You Go: Bring your camera or smartphone and any gear you can carry comfortably. Ensure batteries are fully charged, and memory cards have available space. Dress for the weather and wear comfortable shoes.

Each Composition in the Field class begins with a brief instructor talk, followed by a guided walk through one of the 20+ photogenic locations in the DPA's network across the United States and Canada. The curriculum spans street photography, architecturally rich interiors, farmers' markets, zoos, landscapes, and much more.
In this three-hour session, you will learn to shoot with intention, develop a stronger eye for composition, and come away with a practical foundation you can apply everywhere from your travels to a casual afternoon in your own neighborhood.
