Class Description

Description

Join our photography lessons at Grounds for Sculpture in Hamilton, New Jersey, one of our most highly recommended locations from the rotation of excellent photo destinations across the region. Mari Parker, whose beautiful photographs of sculptures appear in our online gallery, is among many Digital Photo Academy participants who enthusiastically praise Grounds for Sculpture as an ideal location for photographers. This unique venue combines art, nature, and photographic opportunity in ways that inspire both beginners and advanced photographers to expand their creative vision.

Grounds for Sculpture, created by philanthropist and artist Seward Johnson, opened in 1992 and represents his artistic vision, generosity, and commitment to making art accessible to the public. The location offers a serene yet imaginative setting, providing countless indoor and outdoor photography opportunities that appeal to photographers of all interests and skill levels. Your instructor will demonstrate and guide you through accessible techniques to capture compelling photographs using diverse composition strategies specifically suited to the venue's unique environment. Employ leading lines and the rule of thirds to photograph whimsical and dramatic statues positioned along reflecting pools and surrounded by peaceful landscapes. Experiment with unusual perspectives like a "worm's eye" view or employ negative space to enhance the gothic quality of mythological figures emerging from the earth. Direct your lens toward fountains or cascading water features to practice shutter speed priority, whether capturing a frozen moment of flowing water stopped mid-motion or rendering a soft, ethereal blur suggesting continuous movement and flow.

Inside the arboretum and museum spaces, abundant natural light provides an ideal environment for you to practice and master aperture priority techniques, allowing you to focus sharply on a vibrant flower in full bloom while using depth of field creatively to impressionistically blur the background. You will discover abundant opportunities for still life and fine detail photography that collectively contribute to building a strong professional photography portfolio worthy of printing and public exhibition.

The property's history spans nearly three centuries, beginning in 1745 when King George II granted 42 acres that later became a State Fair Ground. Over time, the land has served many purposes, from a popular auto-racing facility drawing 50,000 elite spectators to venues for craft exhibitions and agricultural shows. Famous performers and political figures have used the grounds for speeches and performances. Belva Ann Bennet Lockwood, the first woman presidential candidate, drew crowds demanding women's voting rights. Annie Oakley performed in Buffalo Bill's Wild West Show, and the Grand Ole Opry, Dick Clark, and Bobby Vinton all made appearances at this historic venue. Today, Grounds for Sculpture serves as an ideal destination for photographers seeking diverse subjects and themes, from landscapes and water features to sculptures, botanical subjects, and architectural compositions in both indoor and outdoor settings.

Important Note: Please bring $20 for the entrance fee to Grounds for Sculpture.

Each Composition in the Field class begins with detailed instructional remarks and technical guidance from one of our experienced, knowledgeable teachers, followed by a guided exploration of one of many diverse and photogenic locations from our comprehensive roster of 20-plus cities and regions. Photography opportunities span street scenes, distinctive architectural interiors, farmers' markets, botanical gardens, zoos, natural landscapes, and many additional subjects. Our extensive collection features exceptional work from both students and instructors across numerous venues and cities throughout the United States and Canada, showcasing the variety of photography styles and subjects that can be explored.

During the three-hour session, you will enjoy the experience while building your photography skills, learn to shoot strategically and with intention, create more compelling and engaging photographs that you will be proud to share, and develop the foundational knowledge and skills needed to strengthen your photography for future travels, special occasions, and everyday moments.
