Class Description

Description

Faye Sanders

In this course, you will explore figure painting using a comprehensive range of approaches spanning from traditional to contemporary methods and sensibilities. The class begins with quick gestural warm-up poses that build confidence and spontaneity. Students then undertake an extended long pose that develops over the course of several class sessions, allowing for deeper investigation and refinement. The course emphasizes key painting concepts, including color mixing strategies, individual brushstroke techniques, value and tonal relationships, and control of paint opacity and transparency. This course is carefully tailored to meet individual student needs regarding materials and personal artistic sensibilities; all students are encouraged to develop work in whatever style and approach they prefer and find most meaningful.

Eric Michelson

This section of the course explores the rich and diverse range of figure painting methods by examining the underlying structural foundations of the human form and investigating methods for achieving a vivid, varied painted surface that authentically brings the form to life. Students will explore multiple techniques and approaches, including varied brushwork, palette knife techniques, glazing methods, and anatomical understanding. You will develop a discerning eye through careful study, learning to prioritize essential form and deemphasize potentially distracting details in order to construct a compelling and unified visual image.
