American Sign Language (ASL) is a language for the eyes instead of the ears. It is a language separate from spoken English that was intended to help people communicate through hand motions, shapes, and placement in coordination with facial expressions and body movement. ASL possesses its own rules for grammar and syntax. Many high schools, universities, and other educational institutes in the United States now accept ASL as a foreign language requirement needed for graduation.

Learning American Sign Language through virtual learning offers a convenient option by providing flexibility for anyone who has a busy schedule. Live online courses can provide hands-on training from expert instructors that can provide students with the same level of education they would get from sitting in a classroom without having to leave home.

As with any language, ASL possesses regional accents and dialects depending on where an individual lives or whatever groups or socio-economic environment may affect a person’s dialect, including region of the country, age group, or other factors.

Why You Should Learn ASL Online

Virtual Learning provides convenience for learning sign language for communicating and contributing to the Deaf community for personal, social, and professional reasons.

Online vs. In-Person ASL Classes

Learning a new language may present a challenge in various ways, so figuring out the method for getting educated is the first step. As with any language, individuals can choose among several options for learning ASL, including in-person classes, virtual learning, and other online learning options. Some people might feel more comfortable learning ASL through on-demand courses available online along with free web seminars or video tutorials for getting initiated with the language before moving on to formal training.

Students can enroll in ASL courses taught inside classrooms with virtual learning options also available. However, in-person courses allow students to interact with instructors and classmates for a tactile learning experience that has a long-lasting positive effect.

Taking a live online course for learning ASL allows a person to train from the comfort of their own home, which can be especially advantageous for anyone who has been working all day. Online courses typically provide training through teleconferencing software like Microsoft Teams or Zoom that offers enrollees a hands-on learning experience.

Can I Learn ASL for Free Online?

While many people may be interested in learning ASL, work schedules or other obligations might not allow an individual to enroll in classes. However, there are free online options available for anyone interested in picking up new language skills. Several online education providers offer free seminars, YouTube videos, and blog posts.
